I'd imagine now adays you'd just set it up like a normal dialup ISP connection so people could use their normal windows shit with it
Few will listen,
Of the few who listen, fewer still will understand,
Understanding does not mean believe,
Of the handful who believe, most may not know what to do,
Those who even know, how many will actually do ?
And the rare ones who have done it.......

My usual set-up does not have one, but I have several old pc's that still work, that have modems. So if need be I'd be all set.

i think this is more important. A list of ip's to web sites with news. If they shut the web off more than likely they'll do it thru the DNS

how many people could dial in at one time if you set up dialup BBS

well you can buy what is called a ringdown line from the phone company that will let people call in to the same phone number and it will allow separate connections..

It's limited to the size of the phone line you run in...

Like you'd have to run a t-1 line into the modem on the box to get 24 people dialed in at the same time...

A t-1 line runs about $400 a month right now soo it would be kind of expensive to pull it off and we'd need something a lot larger than a t-1 connection to handle the normal volume on glp...

if your pc is about 1 - 2 years old it prob wont have it.

no one uses dial up any more

waste of money for the manufacturer to include that in there.

Funny you should bring this up Trin. I never go without a modem. I also ran a pretty big DOS based BBS back in the 90's. It was WWIV software, and I still love it and have condsidered going back to it recently.

Re: Does Your Computer Have A Dialup Modem?Quote

for those that wonder if newer windows still support old-fashioned modems :

YES.

Vista and 7 both have dial-up options, fax programs and both do ship with some 35MB already included modem-drivers which covers the most used ones.

If you find only 2000 or Xp drivers for ancient modems, no problem : Vista and 7 will eat these drivers too. Just point the hardware wizard to the path where those drivers are located.

Another option is bluetooth powered cellphone. Most of them have builtin 9600/1440 modem emulators, so that you can use the cellphone as a modem connection.See the manual and drivers for your phones..

Old PCI modemcards or USB modems can be found at ebay and co for extreme low prices..

I got to test out viacom cable modems back in 1993. It was a 486 box at the time and about as big as a xbox 360 LOL. My first intro to the internet. Lessee here Compuserv was still around... Lycos was a spider. The net was mostly grey pages with a few pics heavy on text and Netscape was the premier browser. IE wasn't even invented yet. Mosaic was another one and AOL was version 1.0.

Before all that though I had a 2400 baud modem and I remember Ripterm and a few BBS dial ins.
