Does Your Computer Have A Dialup Modem?

Re: Does Your Computer Have A Dialup Modem?Quote

A lot of mobile phones have modem capability. Mine does and it's quite a few years old (Motorola).

If you have a cable to interface between the computer and cell phone, you could probably find the software to use it as a modem.

Re: Does Your Computer Have A Dialup Modem?Quote

You know... I noticed that every computer I've bought in the last 2 or 3 years does NOT come with a dialup modem..

This used to be standard equipment...

So if the net goes down and GLP has to revert to old school BBS style dialup coms how many of you would even be able to connect with your current setups?

I used to run a rather large bbs way way back in the day and I COULD do it again if the need arose but how many people could even use it?

Today with unlimited long distance plans this would be a good backup communications plan incase TPTB pulled the net...

Hi, Trin

I ran a Fidonet BBS from 1989 to 1995 so would be able to help in a GLP-NET should there be need to establish same.

We'd have to get several of us in different locales to get a Fidonet node number: [link to www.vadvbbs.com]

Setup and ready to dial.

Thats why phone over net is no good. The grid goes down, you loose, net, phone and TV. Not good.

The more comms the better.

how many people could dial in at one time if you set up dialup BBS

The "leet" BBSes were those that had multiple phone lines. You could CHAT online with someone at the same time you're using the BBS, how COOL IS THAT?!

Ahhh... memories...

I used to psysop a BBS with only one line and many users could be on...

I have dial-up, wireless modem but with no data-limit and fastest connection it's very, very expensive. I pay 80 Euro's a month.

Heh, while we are on the subject perhaps it's time that people do got about scoring a modem.

Also for the more .... involved people we need some BBS software...

Obviously getting it NOW is easier then *IF* they pull the internet...

I think Synchronet [link to www.synchro.net] is somewhat easy to get going....

I have a copy of wildcat in the box (sealed).... I guess I should break it out for a test.

Do you guys remember all the underground text files and magazines?

Does that shit even exist in a modern form anymore?

I'm not really in the 'scene' anymore...

I think that sort of 'forbidden info' would be great for glp

I don't mean the hacker shit I know that's still out there but like..

the other stuff...

YES, and it's still around...

Let me dig it out but they are online now.... And I think they provide some way of mirroring the content....

So far I see:

monthly $10
quarterly $27
semi-annually $48
annually $84

Assuming they are left running......

Anyways they are pretty cool..

hahaha

I'd imagine now adays you'd just set it up like a normal dialup ISP connection so people could use their normal windows shit with it
 Quoting: ^TrInItY^

mistake, the first censorship will come by govt activating their back doors in windows. if you're serious about this you should base it on freedos and bananacom(now free)and it will all fit on a self-booting write-protected floppy with other stuff like cutemouse driver. at least it did with lync and dos 3. Immune to virus and remote trojan activation of hard drive crashes and will run on any x86 pc ever made.

And for bandwidth, set it up so all it does is download a long text file in a few seconds of the days ominous news chosen by glp and self-disconnect for the next caller, and a way for callers to submit posts which you can evaluate for inclusion in the next text.

after all this is just an emergency preparedness measure; you don't want to throw a bunch of money at it. easy for others to mirror the content and list their numbers too, or even alternate distribution from ham radio to printed flyers.

Or the other question being should we setup some kind of GLP Fido net while it's still easy to do on the internet?

You can always migrate stuff around, and add modems later.....

I've always insisted on one, just in case. My livelihood is dependent on my 'net access.

An additional question might be; does your ISP offer dial-up as an option?

the isp offering dialup wouldn't matter

you'd actually dial straight into the GLP phone number and connect to our modems IF I set it up that way

I've got lots and lots of modems... BANKS of them, but very few phone lines...

But I also keep a couple of DialUp ISP accts active... FidoNet may be the only way...

I also have my Pactor HF email gateway if I need to, and I COULD hook that to the BBS, so you could send BBS messages via Ham radio...

Funny you should bring this up Trin. I never go without a modem. I also ran a pretty big DOS based BBS back in the 90's. It was WWIV software, and I still love it and have condsidered going back to it recently.

I got to test out viacom cable modems back in 1993. It was a 486 box at the time and about as big as a xbox 360 LOL. My first intro to the internet. Lessee here Compuserv was still around... Lycos was a spider. The net was mostly grey pages with a few pics heavy on text and Netscape was the premier browser. IE wasn't even invented yet. Mosaic was another one and AOL was version 1.0.

Before all that though I had a 2400 baud modem and I remember Ripterm and a few BBS dial ins.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 730810

My BBS was ran on a a Packard Bell 486SX with a Turbo button that caused the PC to blast of from 11 Mhz to a blazing 22 Mhz.

I'll never forget upgrading my 2400 to a 14.4 and adding 2 more mb's of memory to that computer...
