Extract it from XP it's in the "c:\program files\windows nt"
If I recall correctly. You need:
hypertrm.exe
hypertrm.dll
And you'll be ok. It does support X/Y/Z modem. "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

I've always insisted on one, just in case. My livelihood is dependent on my 'net access.
An additional question might be; does your ISP offer dial-up as an option?
the isp offering dialup wouldn't matter
you'd actually dial straight into the GLP phone number and connect to our modems IF I set it up that way

That sounds really kewl!
No, the last computer I had that had dial up modem was on my Compaq, before they united with HP. Looks like I'll have to check into getting one for my laptop, and perhaps one of the desktops.

We use high-speed cable access but have all the old dial-up equipment "just in case" (my husband is a computer pack rat)......It would take some juggling, but we could be up and running in a day....If TSHTF.

You know... I noticed that every computer I've bought in the last 2 or 3 years does NOT come with a dialup modem..
This used to be standard equipment...
So if the net goes down and GLP has to revert to old school BBS style dialup coms how many of you would even be able to connect with your current setups?
I used to run a rather large bbs way way back in the day and I COULD do it again if the need arose but how many people could even use it?
Today with unlimited long distance plans this would be a good backup communications plan incase TPTB pulled the net...

yep, a smokin' 300 baud! It took a couple of hours, but I was finally able to download a copy of Pac-man!(in ascii).

So is anyone interested in setting up some kind of BBS network thing?
on the internet it shouldn't be *THAT* hard.... lol "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

I got to test out viacom cable modems back in 1993. It was a 486 box at the time and about as big as a xbox 360 LOL. My first intro to the internet. Lessee here Compuserv was still around... Lycos was a spider. The net was mostly grey pages with a few pics heavy on text and Netscape was the premier browser. IE wasn't even invented yet. Mosaic was another one and AOL was version 1.0.
Before all that though I had a 2400 baud modem and I remember Ripterm and a few BBS dial ins.
My BBS was ran on a a Packard Bell 486SX with a Turbo button that caused the PC to blast of from 11 Mhz to a blazing 22 Mhz.
I'll never forget upgrading my 2400 to a 14.4 and adding 2 more mb's of memory to that computer...

Hah we had a Tandy MMPC model 10 computer. MMPC for multimedia computer, it came with a cdrom LOL and windows 3.11 dos 6.0.
Man I had the 486sx chip too at 33mhz. I blew 200 bucks to upgrade it to 486dx chip LOL. Only had 4 megs of memory too until I got another 4 for about 200 bucks at frys. 120 meg harddrive. Jesus that thing was a dinosaur. I got it to play Doom, Wing Commander Privateer, and X-wing / Tie Fighter though.
I wish we still had that machine around.

What do you guys think about the 'Magic Jack'? You can fire your phone company. You plug it in to your usb, then connect your to that. Then presto. I think you have to have an active internet connection in order for it to work. I don't know. Tell me if this thing works?

You so fucking rock. Love the way you think.
Now, the computer I use daily, no...
The other desktops I have, could plug in...yes, plenty o dial up capability. I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man—Thomas Jefferson
Just for the record, my laptop came with a modem, a place to plug a telephone line. I think many people have to use a dialup modem when traveling, and laptops are for the "road warrior," as they say.
If or when TSHTF it will be very useful to keep in touch with all our friends and to reconstruct GLP in some way. Hopefully the long distance lines will be intact.

using netzero "highspeed" with a few mods here and there and really it works pretty well. it's a total bitch if i try to download something but I can let a video loadup on youtube for about 5 minutes(which is pretty amazing if you've ever tried to use youtube on dailup) and it's ready to go but with rather shitty quality and most sites pop up quick in a couple seconds since I have the display qualities turned down
Either way it's only like 10 bucks a month so I can live with it ha

Yes.
Most Fidonet systems and Fido-based networks use the binkp protocol for mail transfers across the Internet. You can also use a virtual modem to allow old DOS based mailers like Front Door to connect over a RAW telnet connection.
Argus is a great mailer that will work over modem and tcp/ip connections.
Depends on how big of a message network... QWK will also work using automated scripts to download/upload QWK/REP packets.

I'm pretty sure its for voice... Back in "the day" Creative of soundblaster fame put out a VOIP Blaster...
Basically a USB device that you would plug into your pc, and you then could attach a normal PSTN phone... There was a hack for it to work as a H323 endpoint so you could use it with Asterisk & whatnot.
Anyways for a while it was cool to use as people would think 'you were on the phone' not goofing off endlessly talking to people on the internet. Sadly XP sp2 killed the driver. :(
Anyways I doubt this 'Magic Jack' could handle fax/data as those dsp's cost way more money then the ones that do voice...
But sometimes you never know. "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

So, then they pull the telephone land lines, and if you don't have a Radio Transciver for your phone modem that pretty much ends that. And then there is Radio Jamming so even Wifi and Internet via Radio Packet stuff goes bye bye.
So, how many of you all now know to put your RS232 Serial ports into Current mode? Oh, you could run RS232 current mode house to house on your block, each house being a relay... lol
With so much telephone traffice now starting to be carried by the Cable TV companies, the two wire barb wire fence telepnone land line may be soon a thing of the past.
How many here perhaps know how to do Cable Modem to Cablem Modem across two Cable Modems and a piece of COAX? But perhaps a CAT5 Base 100 with plenty of repeater bridges and your block and even neighborhood could come up with not the WWW but at least somethign like priate city wide web.
Then again, eyeballing yea old dishy-networks and directs-tv sat dishes, the local HAMS here are doing a full blown county wide microwave 'extra-net'.
But, yes, Trinity, every one of my computers has a modem and I have bunches as well as a few spares to boot.
The only thing that bugs me about phone modems is that they never did come with their own PBX simulator... that should have been built into every phone modem long ago, and likely would have been except for MaBell sleeping with Uncle Charlie. Otherwise we could all compete with the telephone companies.

Well I guess if you hunt hard enough you could score some arcnet cards.. I've heard too many stories of farmers running it over their fences ....
As for the "pbx simulator" you can find FXO cards on ebay that go into voip....
In a 'best case scenario' we'd just completely bypass phone lines with wifi and ipv6 so that we don't need any NAT everyone can talk to everyone else.. the way the internet was meant to be...... Wifi cannons are great for distances as backhauls... But it'd require some coordination. "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln.
