I remember way back in the beginning of the commercial internet when I was talking to potential customers about it the one question I always got was what happens when these servers go down. To which I would respond by showing them the software that anyone could install to make there own. Since at that time it was mostly the BB guys and University's that where serving up HTML.

The point being the internet is when a server is set up and someone outside of it connects into it and makes a request for some information.

btw any1 remember doin a finger on someone.

Dial up is an everyday thing for me. Living back in the hills does have a couple of disadvantages, net access being one of them. Satellite is available but who wants to pay 70 bucks a month for it when the tech is still not perfected?

So, for me, 37.2 Kbps is a way of life.

get the new Opera 10 web browser - it has that 'accelerator' stuff that used to be advertized as '5x dialup speed' etc built in and it really makes a difference.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that. I know the accelerators don't really increase your speed, it just has to do with compression of the webpage which makes it load faster, but I'll give it a try and see if it improves the browsing experience.

DOS LIVES!!!!!!!!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 798915

Speaking of DOS, make yourself a bootable DOS 6 CD.
If you ever need to reformat your HD, it's best to remove every vestige of Windows OS (if you use XP, Vista, or other MS OS). Simply set BIOS to boot up using CD and remove all partitions. Then install a DOS 6 partition and reformat.
DOS 6 will only format 2.5 gig. Then reboot using your Windows installation. Remove all partitions (DOS 6) and reformat HD. Then remount OS.

Doing so will prevent Windows from using any pre-existing software from a previous Windows install still on the HD.

Yeah, it's a SNAP.

First I installed MS-DOS on Virtual PC 2007 (free download)
[link to www.microsoft.com]

then I got the cdrtools-latest.zip from here: [link to smithii.com]

Then it was a simple matter of copying the "dos" directory out of virtual PC using the fshare extensions thing, then running something like this:

..\mkisofs.exe -o ..\x.iso -J -r -v -V test_disk -b dos622_1.img .

Next I just create a virtual floppy with MS-DOS, and an IDE-CDROM driver... Im sure you can score all of this crap on bootdisk.com

in the directory with the DOS directory... This creates a bootable cdrom that boots off the virtual floppy dos622_1.img and will include the DOS directory.

Then you can test your CD-ROM ISO file with virtual pc before you burn it.......

I've always insisted on one, just in case. My livelihood is dependent on my 'net access.

An additional question might be; does your ISP offer dial-up as an option?

the isp offering dialup wouldn't matter

you'd actually dial straight into the GLP phone number and connect to our modems IF I set it up that way

Can you pre-set-it-up ?

You know, give us the details now, in case we ever need them? Sorry if this is a duplicate question. And thank you for this service. (I click on a d s)
