-Asteroid blast reveals holes in Earth's defences-
The US Office of Science and Technology Policy, which advises the White House, must develop a policy to address the asteroid hazard by October 2010 under a deadline imposed by 2008 legislation. It is likely to be influenced by a report from the National Research Council on the asteroid problem, which is expected by year's end.

What they are not telling us is why the deadline of 2010, only one year away. What is going to happen, , say like on 2012?

So....that was a meteor...was it ?

If it was ... no big problem..

If it wasn't.. it was a satellite and that would be a very big problem.

" Satellite crash 'worse than missile blast'

* 18 February 2009

SPACE weapons are destructive enough, but out-of-control satellites can be worse. So says a space scientist who has calculated that last week's collision between a US Iridium satellite and the defunct Russian craft Cosmos 2251 delivered far more destructive energy than China's anti-satellite missile test in 2007.

To obliterate a spacecraft, a collision has to impart at least 40,000 joules of energy for every kilogram of the craft's mass. In China's space-weapon test, a missile destroyed a satellite by imparting 350,000 joules per kilogram. The impact added 3000 tennis-ball-sized pieces of debris to the 10,000 objects already in low-Earth orbit. Last week's 42,120-kilometre-per-hour collision was even more energetic. It imparted 50 megajoules per kilogram of the satellites' mass, to produce what Lewis expects to be a debris field with an extra 10,000 fragments (shown in red). Worse, many will move in the Iridium craft's orbit, which crosses orbits of other Iridium craft at the poles. This, says Lewis, will greatly increase the chance of another Iridium collision.

The fiery plunge

One of the more common ends for defunct spacecraft and garbage is death by cremation, in which old spacecraft and debris are intentionally burned up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Russia's unmanned Progress cargo ships routinely end their spacefaring lives as fireballs after delivering cargo shipments to the International Space Station. The Russian Space Station Mir was also discarded in a similar funeral pyre in 2001.

Jules Verne, Europe's first-ever Automated Transfer Vehicle, gave scientists a spectacular light show when it ended its debut flight last fall in a fiery blaze over the Pacific Ocean. Two chase planes were dispatched to record the death of the spacecraft, which was as large as a London double-decker bus.

Some pieces of debris don't burn up in controlled cremations.

Last November, a tank of toxic ammonia the size of a refrigerator burned up over the Southern Pacific Ocean more than a year after a spacesuit-clad astronaut chucked it from the International Space Station. NASA did not know where the tank would ultimately re-enter and the U.S. Space Surveillance Network tracked the object to make sure its toxic remains did not endanger people on Earth.

Perhaps the most memorable piece of U.S. space junk was the 77-ton Skylab space station, which re-entered the Earth's atmosphere in July 1979, spreading debris across areas of the Southeastern Indian Ocean and parts of Western Australia. "

Remember many satellites are the size of a school bus.

Now.... Radioisotope of iridium, 192

is dangerous like other radioactive isotopes. The only reported injuries related to iridium concern accidental exposure to radiation from 192Ir used in brachytherapy.[21] High-energy gamma radiation from 192Ir can increase the risk of cancer. External exposure can cause burns, radiation poisoning, and death. Ingestion of 192Ir can burn the linings of the stomach and the intestines.[76] 192Ir, 192mIr, and 194mIr tend to deposit in the liver, and can pose health hazards from both gamma and beta radiation.

Iridium-192 is used as a gamma ray source in industrial radiography to locate flaws in metal components. It is also used in radiotherapy as a radiation source.

Iridium-192 has accounted for the majority of cases tracked by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in which radioactive materials have gone missing in quantities large enough to make a dirty bomb.

why is it important..??

Do you know the name of the satellites used to provide voice and data coverage to satellite phones, pagers and integrated transceivers over Earth's entire surface.

IRIDIUM is the name. Iridium satellite constellation.

Iridium 28

Iridium 28 failed in July 2008 and has been replaced with the in-orbit spare Iridium 95

Iridium 33
Search Wikinews Wikinews has news coverage of the 2009 satellite collision

* Russian and US satellites collide
* Burning debris from satellites spotted over several US cities:

Main article: 2009 satellite collision

At 16:56 UTC on February 10, 2009 Iridium 33 collided with the defunct Russian satellite, Kosmos-2251.[12] This was the first time two intact satellites have collided.[13] Iridium 33 was in active service when the accident took place but was one of the oldest satellites in the constellation, having been launched in 1997.

Do you knoiw how many ??

US missile hits 'toxic satellite'

The US has successfully struck a disabled spy satellite with a missile fired from a warship in waters west of Hawaii, military officials say.

THE BIG LIE

Officials were worried its hydrazine fuel could do harm, but it is not yet known if the fuel tank was destroyed.

IT WAS IRIDIUM 192....... That was the big problem...

And that is what explains the 50mt blast..

Satellites and the dirty bomb....

You are correct in your observation but not your interpretation. Indonesia is Ground Zero, all right, but chosen as such by the American military. Our American secret agencies, "special forces," etc., use Indonesia for target practice.

Anyone who believes that the tsunami of December 1994 was caused by an unexpected natural earthquake is woefully naive.

But why is the media saying NOTHING about this?

They DID make a big deal of the possible meteor -impact crater in Latvia, which was a fraud, claimed to have been caused by a 1-meter asteroid. That was all over the press, CNN, and whatever.

This baby was 10 meters in diameter. And nothing. Somewhat weird, no?

Are they trying to hide the fact from us, that one day we might just be "gone" without warning?

I found it rather interesting that the explosion over indonesia - was NOT being tracked and I read one article that said it caught everyone by suprise? Is that really possible. And, why such a huge explosion? why did it actually explode and not just become a giant fireball in the sky and then fall to earth. Why the explosion? what made it explode? and so HUGE?

Massive Asteroid Over Indonesia:

This has taken awhile to filter into the Western press, but an asteroid exploded over the town of Bone,Indonesia on October 8th at around 11am local time. Initially, locals called the police to report that a plane had crashed, or that an earthquake shook the ground, as reported in the Jakarta Globe. The Jakarta Post quoted Thomas Djamaluddin, head of the Lapan Center for Climate and Atmosphere Science Implementation as saying that the explosion was due to a meteorite or bit of space junk that had entered the Earth's atmosphere. As it turns out after further analysis, the explosion was due to an asteroid about 5-10 meters (15-30 feet) in diameter exploding in the air between 15 and 20 km (nine to 12 miles) above sea level. Nobody was injured as a result of the explosion, but it evidently caused quite a scare with the local population!

In a press release from the Near Earth Object (NEO) program, the explosion was detected by many International Monitoring System (IMS) infrasound stations, five of them 10,000 km (6200 miles) away, and one 18,000 km (11,100 miles) from the blast. These stations monitor seismic waves, infrasound (low frequency soundwaves), hydroacoustic, and radionuclide emissions as part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). They are well equipped to monitor explosions of nuclear weapons, but also detect other events such as meteorite impacts and asteroid explosions, tsunamis and earthquakes.

When analyzed, the amount and intensity of low frequency sound waves created by the explosion allowed researchers Elizabeth Silber and Peter Brown of the Meteor Infrasound Group at the Univ. of Western Ontario to determine that the explosion caused by the asteroid was on the scale of 30 – 50 kilotons of TNT. To give you an idea of how powerful of an explosion this is, the bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II exploded with the force of 20 kilotons of TNT.

A video of the explosion can be seen here: Asteroid Explodes over Bone, Indonesia. The fireball – also called a bolide – created a dusty tail upon entering the atmosphere of the Earth. It is estimated that the asteroid was traveling around 72,000 km/hour (45,000 miles/hour) when it hit the atmosphere. As an asteroid enters the thick Earth atmosphere, it slows down abruptly and heats up due to the process of ablation. If this asteroid were made of metal instead of rock, it would likely have impacted the ground causing a lot of damage. Fortunately for the residents of Bone and the surrounding area, the rock broke up in a large fireball instead. There haven't been any reports of pieces that have touched down as of yet.

Asteroids of this size are predicted to impact the Earth about every 2-12 years, and the last one of this magnitude was a bolide over the Marshall Islands on February 1, 1994. That impactor was estimated to be between 4.4 and 13.5 meters. A full analysis of that event is available on the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System.

Of course, events like this always raise the question of why the object wasn't detected before it even entered the atmosphere. The NEO program has cataloged over 600 objects in the size of 10 meters, but there are many, many more out there. The cost of a monitoring and cataloging all of the Near Earth Objects would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars, but more events like this may spur the political will and capital to further efforts at protecting human lives from the potential damage of meteorite impacts.

Space rocks detonate? Wicked. 5
 Quoting: Prisoner of Technology

Mass + Velocity+ Atmosphere= friction energy/release

In other words things going fast into atmoshpere heat up to the point where they explode.

A similer effect can be seen when overloading small caliber lead bullets in large shell casings. They literally explode into lead vapor when leaving the barrel. (I'm talking about wildcat rounds here, for example 6.5mm loaded into a magnum case like a .300. (Necked down of course)

The more velocity and mass, the greater the release of energy.

Some people find this concept difficult to understand, because they don't get out much, and life is like a box of "chokluts"....
