In order for us to actually help you we need an accurate history and signalment of the case:
age, sex, neutered or not, number of cats in the household, inside or outside cat or both, any prior health issues ect.
This sounds like an intact male cat marking his territory to me. With the angle of the penis it does "spray" outward. Most of the time their tail is up and kind of wiggles back and forth while doing so. If this is the case, then have him neutered. You should have had him neutered around 5 to 6 months of age in order to prevent this in the first place. Male cats spray. As was stated by a previous poster, good luck with the smell.
If it is not a territorial issue then it could be that something else is bothering him. Often times cats urinate outside of the box in order to tell you something is wrong, sometimes it's health related sometimes not.

Typical remote control-viewing,  your cat is possess, you must have lots of friends everywhere.
Make sure you secure your bedroom door at night, don't take a chance.
Call a priest, get some holy water and spay him, stop feeding him for five to seven days, try not to stare at him, soften your voice more while talking to your cat.
Always keep your self calm, he knows when you are ready to get red of him, keep positive toughs on your mind even if he attack you.
Video his reaction and post it on GLP video site.

If he is not neutered, that is your first line of defense. If he is neutered, better get him to a vet to rule out a uti. If it is not a clinical uti, and he is neutered you may still want to put him on cranberry once daily, as cats can have a subclinical uti that doesn't easily show up on routine lab tests.
It is not uncommon for a cat to spray to tell you.."hey dude! you do have someone besides yourself here to think about once in a while!" or if you got new food and he doesn't like it, he may be letting you know. Jackets, shoes, and coffee makers seem to be favorite targets for unknown reasons. It is more common for intact male cats to spray, but neutered males and females will also spray on occasion.
As a previous post mentioned, a pheromone like Feliway may help, and you definitely want to clean up with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's miracle or Anti-Icky Poo.
Good Luck... and give him positive attention elsewhere. It sounds like he needs it. Cats do not respond well to negative reinforcements, and will shit on your pillow. Don't say you weren't warned. |

If you take him to the vet the real hard part is....
getting a fucking urine sample. They gave me some plastic beads. Told me to put it in a clean box and lock my cat up with it (and food and water).
Yeah. That went over really well. The cat got pissed off at being locked up. I swear he held it for almost 24 hrs.
The next time, I'm leaving the cat at the vet so they can listen to him. |

Our 20lb lady kitty, with tail straight up and quivering was squirting out her rear end onto my closet when great precision. We were so engrossed in conversation that we had ignored her meows.
Have you ever heard of "copy cat?" Well, now she regularly pees in the hallway even though she has access to a litter box or to go outside at will. We've even seen her spray the same bush he does.
Now, we have a new spayed young GIRL kitty and she goes to thaat same bush, with her butt facing it and upright tail quivering but we never see anything squirting.
Our older lady kitty is quite JEALOUS and never sprayed to our knowledge until about a year or so ago when another lady kitty moved in with us. You see, kitties rule. They move in with us, we never choose them, THEY CHOOSE US!

I had the same problem with a cat years ago. The only thing that I know that works is to cut their tail off.

And how many times have you exterierized and catheterized a feline penis? I thought so. If you will notice the non-erect feline penis does point caudally and thus urine will flow in the same direction. How many times have you expressed a cats bladder and watched it spray across the exam table? I thought so. You call it a myth without any prior medical knowledge or experiece. Not a "hinge thing" just the angle of the penis.
Through experience I do think neutering before a male starts spraying may help. It is not a guarentee and I did not tout it as such. I would not however neuter before 5 months because I like the urinary tract to be fully developed prior to neuter. Studies have shown an increase urinary tract problems in cats neutered as very young kittens.
If you wait till a tom cat is 5 yrs old and neuter him vs 6 months old. I doubt the 5 year old stops spraying and likely the 6 month old hasn't even started.
Again, not a guarentee that it will never hapen it just makes it less likely.
Yes females can mark just like female dogs will sometimes hike a leg. Not very common and not likey the poster's problem. |

Male cat neutered.
6 years old.
Personally, I think it's his way of saying FEED ME NOW.
Guess I'll just have to feed him another can. I am going to go by a pet store and find something to add to his water just incase it's a UTI.

As others have said, fix him if he's not already fixed. Male cats (especially fixed ones) have a susceptibility to bladder crystal build-up which can cause problems, so he should be on urinary food of some sort. Our experience is that when a cat has this problem, he will spray on anything -- fixed or not. We feed ours Hill Prescription Diet K/D, but have also used other brands. The most common reason we have found to have a cat do this is a dirty litter box...you get busy and a few days pass and it's stashed down in the basement and you forget... |
