"hydrogen" and "oxygen" are human labels to energy amplitudes that scientists measure and decided to call it that way. in an electronic microscope you may see these amplitudes in 3D form, yet it is still a computer interpreting energy signals. the hydrogen and the oxygen do exist as corpuscles, because corpuscular theory has already been debunked by quantum physics. what we have is a sea of energy and a few humans identifying certain recurring patterns and giving it names. I'll am not so proud that I can't admit that I don't actually know. Which speaks volumes for the American science education.
I have found this. Hydrogen was labeled by Henry Cavendish. He attended Cambridge University but never got a degree. For some reason he called Hydrogen "inflammable air". I guess he meant it was capable of combusting. Basically he took common air and mixed it with hydrogen gas. When an electrical current was applied he noticed it caused condenstation on the inside of the glass tube containing the mixture of air and hydrogen. From this he concluded that the oxygen in the air plus the hydrogen created pure water. Since air also contains nitrogen he was also able to create nitric acid this way.
So, I guess that is the answer. I admit I didn't know this guy. Never once was I ever told about him or his experiments with gases. Basically he worked in reverse. He didn't discover that water was made of hydrogen and oxygen, he discovered that hydrogen and oxygen make water when an electrical current is passed through it.
However, that doesn't explain how science figured the atomic weight of these atoms. Once again, I don't know, but Cavendish did note that applying electricity to these gases did cause them to change volume. |

You cannot see hydrogen. Unless you get enough of it together and make it really cold, then it turns to a liquid and eventually even a solid.
You can weigh hydrogen the same way you weigh weed. You put something in a scale, like a baggie, and see how much it weighs. then you fill the baggie with weed or hydro...gen and see what the difference is and that is how you weigh it.
You can get its volume the exact same way.
Now, as far as counting it neutrons and proton and electrons... I still don't know. |

You said apply electricity to the water, well, electricity is hot. Apply anything hot to water and the heat escapes in the form of bubbles, but those bubbles aren't flammable.
Buuuuttt...it isn't the heat at all that decomposes the hydrogen and oxygen from water, or other things, it's the effect of electrolysis...and you can also boil water with no heat, by applying a vacuum...boiling is a completely different process than electrolysis.
