Things will change in a few years. Just give it time, and be supportive. You are not your son, and your son isn't you. You cannot make your son do anything against his will, and if you try to push too hard it will only push him away from you (in a very bad way).

It sounds like your son, apart from having fun, is rejecting your advice, I would guess, largely because he does not want to become a squared-away military/banking type like you.

For such a well-disciplined guy it sounds like you didn't pass it on to him too well. Part of it may be you, part of it may be the fact that this culture encourages young people to be shiftless, worthless, entitled little parasites.

Tell him you'll kick him out into the street if he does not get a grip and become a responsible human being who can carry his own weight in life without someone to wipe his ass for him.

Then if he does not get it together, follow up on it and make him fend for himself. He will sink or swim. If he lives long enough, he may thank you for it. If he does not, or becomes a homeless drug addict, that will be one of the sad vagaries of life that you will have to live with.

Alanon is full of people who love or care about addicts. There is a vast store of knowledge there about techniques you can use to cope with this situation.
