A lightning / ground question
Quote

Would an electrical wall socket ground be enough to properly ground a wood burning stove from lightning striking the metal chimney?

Any electrical buffs on board with knowledge?

That was the set up before, rod in ground, before the rebuilt wall was built

Not so keen on drilling a hole through nicely painted metal siding. The idea of a wall socket ground came to mind while thinking of alternative ways

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and or military consequences of the lie...It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

Bad Idea, You would be routing the electricity thru your House.

Before going to ground.

Neutral and Ground are connected together in the Main box.

You would be putting the Lightning strike right thru your house wiring.

Totally defeating the purpose of a grounding rod.

Ground it from the outside.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

Re: A lightning / ground questionQuote

It is common knowledge lightning seeks the ground [I've heard lightning also can travel from the ground to the cloud]

Trees are good targets for lightning because the roots are grounded, but haven't heard of too many cars being hit, cause of the rubber tires acting as insulators

My question here is would grounding the stove actually increase the likelihood of being struck by lightning?

Maybe just leave it on it's stone hearth and hope for the best?

Is it asking for trouble grounding something in the earth?

That would work. However I would use a nearby copper water pipe instead.

The best way would be to put lightning arrestors on the roof above the hight of the chimney and bond them together and down the outside of the house to two ground rods and keep it as one wire and seperate the ground rods at least six feet apart.

The lightning will be attracted to the steel smoke stack that rises above the roof. Attach a copper braid or strap from the metal smoke stack to a nearby copper water pipe. That will cause the stack to lose potential (attraction) to the lightning as it seeks a path to earth and makes it look as if it's at ground level, not sticking up into the air as a target.

I had to do a similar techniques when grounding my wind generator and solar tracker.
