Modern Warfare 2 Opens with Terror
Leaked video displays ultra-violent killing of airport civilians.
by Jim Reilly and Scott Lowe

October 27, 2009 - The following story contains spoilers from the Modern Warfare 2 campaign. If you do not wish to know anything about the game, please stop reading.

A leaked video from France surfaced on the internet this morning showing what appears to be the opening single-player campaign mission for Modern Warfare 2. In it, the players apparently assume the role of a terrorist, and are seen entering an airport through an elevator with the rest of your squad members.

The team enters near the baggage check area where about 20 civilians are standing before being gunned down ruthlessly by your squad mates. The rest of the level takes the team through the airport shooting civilians lying on the ground and running away in fear. The graphic depictions in this sequence are some of the most violent-looking and realistic scenes we've seen in a video game. This could cause controversy from the mainstream media for obvious reasons.

Activision or Infinity Ward have not returned requests for comment on this video at this time. We do know Modern Warfare 2 has officially leaked in France when a video from yesterday showed the new 3rd-person perspective camera angle, which Infinity Ward did confirm.

Have you seen the video? What are your thoughts?

Further Analysis
From what we can gather from the dialogue and gritty video, the role of the playable character is that of a C.I.A. operative who has infiltrated the group in order to gather Intel. The loading screen, which reveals the transition between playable characters and factions, begins with a C.I.A. logo and morphs into the logo of the Russian ultra nationalist organization which the game's antagonist, Vladimir Makarov, leads. The graphical transition is accompanied by an alteration to the C.I.A. text directly below the logo, which is then extended and followed by illegible words, presumably identifying the official title of the ultra nationalist faction. Clues after the loading screen are hard to identify, however, the theory is later reaffirmed when Makarov shoots your character as you attempt to climb into the getaway van, and says "Here's your message," almost teasing your character for the presumption that your infiltration had gone unrecognized.

We're still awaiting official comment from Activision, but we don't expect much insight into the context of the footage. Nevertheless, stay tuned to IGN for updates.

I'm still waiting for the MSM to kick up a fuss about it. In the UK the Daily Mail usually is the one to lead a crusade against a particular video game.

The once blamed one for the murder of a boy by the hands of his 'friend'. The claim being that the murderer was obsessed by said game and this programmed to be prone to violence. The flaw in this theory was that the victim was the one who owned the game.

If an attack on an airport in this manner occurs i'm sure that someone will try to put the blame on this game. Over looking the fact that an airport is an obvious place to attack (in India last year there was an attack on a train station) and that if someone planned an attack on a public place due to a game then said person was probably going to attack someone violently at some point anyway.

Yeah like you wouldnt see any innocent people getting killed every single day if you open your TV, no matter if you're watching some movie or daily news, killings everywhere. But who blames the TV? Not many compared to video games.

And this civilian killing scene can be skipped if one thinks that's too much to handle. I personally am going to play it but not so enjoying the killing maybe. BTW: aren't the soldiers innocent too, kind of...? They are just doing their job?

An attack on an airport such as in the video already have happened. In 1972 Japanese members of the Japanese Red Army shot randomly at people at the Lod Airport (Israel) on behalf of a Palestinian group.

OMG! You conspiracy nuts sometimes crack me up. There are tons of FPSs and in almost every computer game since its invention you have to kill (even Pacman can kill the ghosts). Really, some of you should take a breath outside the world of conspiracy.
