They are all pretty much the same. Mac has the glitter, but you have to buy every thing, Windows xp is reliable and more easy than Mac or Linux but susceptible to attack. Linux is the more difficult to use but everything is free. Out of my 3 systems in my box, I probably use xp most, because I'm a netflix user and the other two won't work with it. I would say partition your xp hard drive into two partitions and have Windows xp and Ubuntu on them. Surf in Ubuntu and work in xp.
if you buy a dual core or quad core use 7 outherwise xp or vista is ok. have use all 3 never had problems with them its all in the way you set them up to work an os is only as good as the person setting them up use.use cc cleaner to keep them clean and always make sure computer has right amount of ram to run it right

this point is moot most pre-configured sold now are dual or quad. Unless it's a netbook with an Atom cpu or equalivent
if it's a new laptop or desktop it will probably already be loaded with Win 7. Not many are sold with Xp anymore, sans some netbooks still.
if you are putting your own rig together, get windows 7. No point in putting xp on it

Uh...Linux is great at fast and secure PLUS it's free.
Try Ubuntu.
But if you have deep pockets, Win7 is more secure than XP and it will recognize large amounts of ram, which XP doesn't. (so well) The $150. you'll spend for the Pro OEM could be better spent on hardware...just my:

Re: Getting a new computer soon. Do I need windows 7 over xp if all i do is surf and want to do it fast and secure?
So, are you saying that Linux is not able to be infected by viruses, and that a virus program doesn't need to be running?
My computer is already divided into a c and d drive - and would love to NOT have to deal all these virus protocols etc...
my next question is - if I run linux let's say from drive d - does that mean that drive c is left out of the picture completely...meaning, not able to be accessed for maliciousness etc? but, of course I can still use it for downloads etc?
for dual core machines with over 1 GB ram:
Ubuntu linux, free, safe and new release 9.10 also easy enough to use. Add Opera browser for that and you got the safest browser computer you can get.
Dont worry if you are new to Linux, its easy to learn. Help also easy to get if needed.

Re: Getting a new computer soon. Do I need windows 7 over xp if all i do is surf and want to do it fast and secure?
well to tell you the truth, you are ok these days without antivirus or firewall IF you have firewall in your modem/router/wifi access point. I have done it for three years now without any problems. And this with Windows Vista.
BUT if you really play safe you should have firewall outside your computer like in a wifi box. So that comes very hard to attack.
And if you run Linux and share any file with your Windows friends you might wanno have antivirus to check the files for any windows affected viruses. Or just send the files to Windows friends through web mail like gmail which checks the files when sending.
... Or if you can live with a bit slower browser and limited flash you can get Playstation 3 and surf with it, no virus threat there! :)

are you saying that an external firewall will catch any virus before it even gets to the computer? I didn't even know such a thing existed. Hmm? Is it failsafe? and if you don't mind, how exactly does THAT work? is it costly, where does it hook up? and is there any maintenance?

You sir, fail at the Internet. That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Do not pass go and do not collect $200.

neither nor. ubuntu is not only free but secure & stable as well.
the argument that it is tricky to use is merely m$ propaganda. the opposite is the case due to e.g. multiple desktops. if you have to use software that is only compatible with windows you can run it using a virtual machine on ubuntu. microsoft is the number one reason why actually powerful computers run slowly. it is a load of data trash still based on the earliest versions of windows

If you can pay a little extra for a more refined and hassle-free product, get a Mac.
If you want to save your money for other things, get a generic PC and install Linux.
Both recommendations fall down if you want to PLAY GAMES, in which case you should get a generic PC and install Windows 7.
Any of these choices is PERFECTLY FINE AND VALID CHOICES. Make yours from what suits your needs best.
But do NOT get XP for a new computer today.
Windows XP is EIGHT YEARS OLD. In computer terms, this means it's a relic from medieval times. Windows XP is dead! Windows XP is pushing up the daisies! Windows XP is an ex-operating system!

To date, there has yet to be a virus in the wild that infects Linux based pcs. There are Linux anti-virus programs, but they are actually protecting Windows users.
And yes, you can access Windows hard drives through Linux.

Re: Getting a new computer soon. Do I need windows 7 over xp if all i do is surf and want to do it fast and secure?
Despite what anyone else says, Windows 7 is the most superior operating system to date. It is intuitive and easy to use and is pretty damn secure. Also, it performs better than XP and Vista.
As for comparing it to Linux, if you are willing to learn terminal commands, then great... if not then it is not recommended.
As for Mac, I suppose you could go with a mac, but then you are stuck into getting an overpriced computer. Also you still may need to learn some terminal commands to get full use out of it.
