I suppose you could use the plunger in the bathtub as well to save a little washing elbow grease. Regardless of process, wringing jeans are the worst! lol . |

It'll get easier when you get your toilet plunger, and one of those mop buckets with a wringer to wring them out, and one of the folding wooden clothes racks from Lehmans, and a wood stove. Matter of minutes and your clothes will be drying in front of the wood stove, and humidifying the air. Way to go! |

Wraithwynd User ID: 717743 United States 11/11/2009 02:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We did a method similar to a posters above, however we used a 10 gallon barrel and a home made 'agitator' Basically a plunger, but the stick was 5 feet long with both a board running side to side and one up and down - forming a 't' at the end of the rod. We would move it up and down and turn it back and forth. For tough dirt we used a washing board. 20 Mule Team Borax, Baking Soda and soap flakes (homemade lye soap, grated with a 'cheese grater') 1/2 cup of Borax, 1/2 cup of Baking Soda and about a tablespoon of soap. For whites we added a few drops of Mrs. Stewart's Bluing. Which they still make BTW: [link to www.mrsstewart.com] We didn't actually wring out clothing, yeah we gave it a half-hearted twist or two to get the majority of the water out, but nothing too hard. After all we were hanging the cloths on the line immediately. Thick materials, like Jeans we 'spun'. Hold one end and swing it around and around in a fast circle. Of course you need to step away from the house to do that. It is hard, hard labor, takes a lot of time and frankly I am way to happy to own a wash machine and dryer now days.
