So when it freezes and those bottles expand, then it leaks?

At night?

According to know it all A/C they never leak.
Quoting: BRIEF AND TO THE POINT

Nope! They never leak! You just need to go around and cut a dozen hole in your roof... no biggie! And they LOOK great!

Re: Use a 2-Liter Bottle as a 50 Watt Light Bulb lightbulbQuote

Came across this video and thought I would share it with GLPers.

where's the link???

There is none. Just you tube. By the way, I think you need to leave the bottle out in the sun all day, or at least part of it, then it would work at night. I think.

It's based on the same advanced technology that actually keeps your lightbulb glowing inside the fridge when you close the door. Little known fact one of the leprechauns living in my toaster told me.

I thought the video said they cut themselves off at midnight. Are you sure the light doesn't continue after dark?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 708377

This is from South America, correct, so if they're near the equator they have much daylight hours than us.

Also they do not freeze at the equator.

Thanks for this OP, someday we might be scavenging through debris for those 2-liter bottles to make crude skylights. Nobody knows what's in store for us down the road.

Plast won´t do it. Too fragile.
The botles are nearly indesctructible!!!
Seriously, try to destroy one with a hammer!
Perhaps plexiglass?
I have glass tiles in a shed and the work fine.

That's retarded. Hey look everybody, if I cut a hole in my roof I have light in the daytime!!
Quoting: BRIEF AND TO THE POINT

except the light is transmitted into the home due to conductivity of the water. the crude invention does light a home much better than say a skylight of the same size.

Re: Use a 2-Liter Bottle as a 50 Watt Light Bulb lightbulbQuote

i would guess that something could be engineered into a modern home that would work amazingly well...ie...

a clear cylinder of water that goes from the roof all the way down to the floor...that could really be an amazing light source.

You can light your entire house with one bulb, but you need a system of "fiber optic" or other light conveyors built into your walls. I can see this being a viable future option to save on energy.

Or, just build houses/apartments with a circular theme, in which all rooms are built around a hub, with one bright light source and the use of shutters, you could light an entire house, at night, with one bulb.

Of course, during the day, you could get your light through holes in your roof. :-)

So the real question is. How to people who don't have corrugated metal roof do this? You know, us people in the 1st world. It's easily 4 feet from the top of my roof my ceiling. Hell I can even walk in my attic if I want to. Isn't that amazing?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 808673

Yes but can you *see* in your attic without artificial lighting?

Sailors have been using deck prisms for ages:

For centuries, sailing ships used Deck Prisms to provide a safe source of natural sunlight to illuminate areas below decks.

Now you too can discover the charm and appeal of the past with our classically styled, nautical deck prisms ( glass ) that are both inexpensive and easy to install. The use of a modern adhesive sealant assures a maintenance free andduh proof seal.

The attractive functional design allows nature's light to be captured on the prism's flat upper surface then conducted down through the glass facets; casting shimmering rays of scattered sunlight throughout the darkest areas of the vessel's interior.

These beautiful deck prisms will not only enhance your boating pleasure, but draw rave reviews from shipboard guests and fellow boaters.

Won't the people in the apartment above me get mad about the bottle sticking up in their floor?

They have been known to be real assholes at times.
