Only as a last resort and shop around for the best price. Those Cash4Gold and like programs are all scams. One bragged they were affiliated with the U.S. gov't.

I am really torn about it. I do need the money as I'm stocking up on stuff. My question is: If gold goes crazy high that would mean the dollar is bust. So how would I make money on selling some old gold jewerly when the SHTF? What would they pay me with? The place I went to is a local shop in town that does nothing but buy gold. They offer the most. Is it not better to get something for it now?

I've always been told you should get supplies BEFORE buying PM's. In this case, sounds you're talking gold jewelery. I'd say off load it for the best price you can get to buy supplies (food, water, guns or ammo). $700.00 could go a long way towards preps especially if you go to a store that sells food items in bulk (like those that cater to restaurants or bakeries) Of course you have to have a plan for long term storage.

Re: Help!! Advice on goldQuote

Go to 2 or 3 different stores who buys gold to compare method of gold weighting and price offered.

A good reputable store will separate the pieces based on gold content:
10%, 14%, 18% or 24%. Then it's weight according to the percentage of gold content, then priced at the current market value of the day.

Take someone with you who doesn't take B.S. from people and for security.

Do you mean Karat? Because there is no such thing as 14% gold. Karat represents parts in 24 so 24 Karat is more or less 100% gold .9999. Here is chart comparing Karat with percentage of gold content.

9 kt 37.50%
10 kt 41.67%
12 kt 50%
14 kt 58.33%
18 kt 75%
22 kt 91.67%
24 kt 99.99%

Not sure how well that will line up on a message board but important all the same. The last thing we want is some one being misled by a unscrupulous buyer that their gold is only 14% pure.
