The price of gold has soared from $660 (£400) an ounce two years ago to more than $1,000 (£610) today and the number of federal licenses issued to mining companies in California has jumped by 50 per cent.
Membership in the Gold Prospectors Association of America has tripled, tourism operators have reported a surge in bookings for pan-handling tours.
Rivers where the original gold fever of 1849 struck are now populated by entrepreneurs in scuba diving gear who are looking for a new path to wealth after their unrelated businesses were squeezed in the recession.
The original "49ers" are thought to have found only about 20 per cent of California's gold, extracting around £6 billion over five years at today's prices, so mining companies are still striking lucky.
However, the burgeoning mining boom is facing a setback after Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, imposed a temporary moratorium on suction dredge mining, which involves using gasoline-powered devices to scrape gold flecks off river beds.
An environmental review will determine how much harm the practice is doing to struggling salmon runs and may not be completed until 2011.
It followed pressure from the 3,500-strong Karuk tribe, whose ancestors were overrun by the original 1849 gold rush.
The tribe is trying to protect salmon runs on the Klamath river, around which their ancestors have been based for centuries.
"Our original intent was not to shut down dredging statewide, but because the new 49ers and these mining clubs fought us so hard, we had little alternative but to challenge the rules," a tribe spokesman said.
Many of the dredging permits are held by the 2,000 members of the "New 49ers" gold mining club based in Happy Camp on the Klamath river.
Dave McCracken, the club's founder and a former Navy Seal, said: "Dredging is what gains you access to high-grade gold deposits at the bottom of the river. It's the only way to get at them."
Mike Higbee, a California miner, said: "If we are unable to overturn [the moratorium] ... it would only be natural that California miners are going to be looking at Oregon, and Washington and Idaho."
But, fearing an influx of miners during the moratorium, Ted Kulongoski, the governor of Oregon, now wants to impose a mining ban in his state.
Despite the moratorium, the new prospectors in California say there is still good money to be made and as the price of gold continues to soar more fortune hunters are arriving.
Brent Shock, who wears a huge gold nugget as a ring and runs pan-handling tours, has seen his bookings double this year. He said: "It's great because everybody gets to make money, possibly a lot of money." “I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied without understanding the world.”

If your name indicates you are in Arizona, you are in one of the premier gold prospecting states. Do A little internet searching, you may be surprised. I have a friend that found a 5 oz. nugget near Meadview. |

On top of the price going up, many people are out of work. Its a semi-logical move for some. Personally, I would move out of the state but thats me. |

You can not pay keep a roof over your head with new-age envirobabble either. Gold panning saw many families throught the Great (most recent) Depression. Small scale panning has little to no impact on the environment. |

They always cared about the salmon, it's just that the gold dredgers are now more actively polluting and harming the salmon habitats due to the increased desirability of gold. |

First, find out if your area has had gold producing mines. Research all the way back to the 1800's for old mines. Buy some basic equipement and go camping in those areas. Get a basic book on prospecting and find some gold. You can I promise you. |

That is where the need for conservativship of the Salmon comes to the fore. Dredging is the imputous for the need move by the state and not simply to thwart all harvesting of the gold.
What I would like to see now is our humble servants on the hill give an accounting of our holdings and a statement of pit treasury accounts. Truth is by law we have more than enough gold, the issue seems to me our trustees.....
