I know why modern metal music sucks so much

I'll tell ya why. Because it's ALL BEEN DONE BEFORE. I too have been looking for something in metal lately that's not so aggro and tunelessly bludgeoning that I go screaming into the night before ending up with a brain aneurism or not so screamo sounding that I feel I just walked into the gay emo open mic night in a San Fran illternative gay biker bar.

Sadly, the reason I see for this sad state of musical affairs lies in the lack of any balance in people anymore. We have truly reached a low cultural point not only in this country, but around the world. Commercialism has DESTROYED music (not to mention people's souls, which music is just a reflection of). "Metal" is passe as far as saying anything new. It's just a pose now. Slipknot is the last gasp of any "True metal" left.

How do we change this sorry state of affairs? Grab an acoustic guitar, start writing something called SONGS again, with melodies AND words YOU CAN HEAR (!). You need not scream every line to prove you're angry; I mean are you that lame that you have no NUANCE to speak of? No irony? No dynamics?
Finally, stay away from LABELS. People get attached to forms and lose substance. They think "metal" will forever be on the "cutting edge" of music. However, "metal" is now irrelevant, just as Metallica's latest album proved. Megadeth's new album is good, BUT IT'S THE SAME OLD SOUND. The ear gets tired of the same old sound. It's just like the failed "Garage Revival" of the 60's that occurred in the 80's. Now it will be the failed thrash metal revival that occurs in the 00's. Same shit, different decade, get a true identity people. Give it up already s226

Good thing cds last a long time then huh? Turn your radio off and go visit some secondhand joints. Who cares what's "now" or "in". Good music is timeless.

Exactly. And there is always great new stuff being made, you just need to search a little. I've have discovered loads of brilliant albums I never even knew about by constantly seeking and keeping an open mind. Once you start saying stuff like "all music is shit now" you start to believe it.

Genres of music ebb and flow, but quality is always there somewhere.

Music died the moment it became a product.

Need a reflection? Try Michael Jackson.

New Megadeth is so sterile and boring. Then again I've always disliked Megadeth, but I gave this one a fair shot.

There is always some good underground metal coming out here and there; you just have to look for it. I haven't discovered any new bands lately though because I'm getting older and less fascinated by the genre.

The best thing I've encountered this year in "rock" is Rancid's new album, "let the dominoes fall". It's a pretty far cry from metal...thank god for that. However, this hardcore punk revival stuff like The Gallows new album "Grey Britain was a real disappointment. Anger for anger's sake is NOT what it's about. You have to have a legitimate REASON why you're angry and back it up. And where the fuck did humor go? That's why I say GWAR's Lust in Space is hands down the best metal record this year. Why? Because they know this "metal this and metal that" is a load of bullshit and they don't take it seriously

No, I just think there's nothing there in the genre that's innovative anymore. I don't think it has to really do with one's age. Good, original music is timeless. PERIOD. Fuck, if Motorhead's Ace of Spades came out this year for the first time, it'd still be kick ass!

It's truly a matter of searching op, even within the genre itself.

Oh I have. The closest I can find is the new one by Converge. But for most part, you can take your nails down a chalkboard and achieve the same effect ...maybe I am getting too old for this shit, who knows?

Mastodon "Crack The Skye" is by far the best recent metal album I've heard. If you like technical death metal, check out Augury "Fragmentary Evidence".

Let's see, what else...Candlemass "Death Magic Doom" has some good tunes....oh yeah, Mastodon "Crack The Skye" is pretty amazing.

Other noteworthy albums from '08 and '09:

Grand Magus "Iron Will"
God Dethroned "Passiondale"
Heaven and Hell "The Devil You Know"
Opeth - Watershed

New Slayer and Immortal albums are kinda sucky, but if you're already a fan of those bands then you'll like 'em.

I could not agree more with this.

I didn't like their style much when i first heard them 4 or 5 years ago but Crack the Skye is a seriously good record with incredible musicianship.
