I work in the UK music industry. Have spent years in A&R, management et al. It's mostly run by idiots. It's a good life if you like being broke all the time. Very few people, be it the bands, artists, managers or actual soldiers at the labels actually make any money.

You get to see loads of great bands, but that in itself runs the risk of becoming sick and tired of the same old shit. At some point, you will get fucked over, it's part of the game. The tipping point though, is when you realise you have gone from loving music to being a fully fledged sucker of Satans cock when you make your signing decision based on Money, as opposed to the love of the band. However, it is called THE MUSIC BUSINESS.

After while, it simply becomes just like any other job in the world; there are some days you just cannot get out of bed, some days when you hate every person that comes in through your door and when you especially hear the same shit for the tenth time that day.

Saying all that, these points are the same regardless of what industry you are involved in. It really is the greatest time for a band to be alive; there is so much more opportunity to get your music listened to, which means you have a far greater chance of making some kind of success for yourself.

Make the best record you can, get rehearsed up to full battle strength and just play. That in itself is a success. The money making part is in the hands o the Gods.

Hope that helps. peace

I love music, but I have to agree with you about calling music an industry. Its an art. a form of expression. Thats why music sux on the radio these days, because they are in it for the money not for why they originally started music in the first place, it just doesnt have the same feel.

I'm in the indie world and it is a completely different environment. Most are here because they actually like music and those that want to be on a major burn out pretty quick of they dont get signed. Started as a promoter and now on the distro side.

I'm a side man to some pretty big names. I love my job.

I've never been on the side dealing with A&R, record companies, and all that bullshit. I wouldn't enjoy that because I don't have much of an ability to kiss peoples ass. I show up, throw down, and get paid.

The industry itself sucks. But if you're hip, an egomaniac that knows fuck all, have the ability to talk out of your ass, and love to make yourself sound like a big-shot, than the music industry is for you.

that is not true. the 16-24 year olds are again buying cd's because they are seekin a better quality sound for their home and auto sound system. This is also part the reason that record players have been makin a comeback.

The level of downloads on sites like Itunes has leveled off at 2million. as well the elder generation has never stopped buying them and the industry after being lead around by their noses by the 20somthangs are realizing that folks what music in all formats. fyi You will be hearin the term music cloud more and mo.

Dont let the game run you. Run the game. The game doesnt change, people change. innovation is the key. Evolve w/ the scene.
