BREAKING NEWS: Explosion, fire reported near NSL refinery
November 4th, 2009 @ 10:55am

NORTH SALT LAKE -- Emergency crews are on the scene of a refinery explosion at the Silver Eagle Refinery at 2355 S. 1100 West.

Jeff Bassett, with South Davis Fire, said his department was dispatched to the fire at 9:13 a.m. When they arrived, Silver Eagle's fire brigade was already putting the fire out, and it took only a few minutes to knock the flames down.

Surrounding refineries are putting off a lot of smoke, but that is due to power bumps caused by the initial explosion, and none of them is in any danger, according to Bassett.

No school evacuations
Officials at Woods Cross Elementary school have issued the word that the children there are safe and fine. They are asking parents not to pick their children up.No homes are being evacuated. There are power outages in the local area.

The explosion was a result of a line carrying hydrogen and diesel fuel that leaked onto the ground. It ignited, causing the large explosion and resulting fire.

Several nearby homes damaged

There were no injuries were reported at the refinery or surrounding homes; however, some damage is being reported to nearby homes.

Linda Wood lives near the refinery. She wasn't home at the time of the explosion. When she heard what happened, she rushed home to find her front door open, all the windows blown out and dishes on the floor. There was also some damage to the foundation of the home.

She said if she had been inside the house during the blast, she would have been hurt. A city inspector is going through the house to see if it needs to be condemned.

Another house in the area had it's garage door blown off.

Paul Chavez was visiting friends in the area. He said, "I was meeting with my friend, and we were upstairs in the library, and we heard an initial blast. We didn't know what type, what it was. It felt like a second. And the second one was a compression blast, where we actually felt it in our bodies and the entire house shook for probably three to four seconds. It seemed like it was much longer.

"We didn't know if it was the big earthquake or if a train had derailed. I had instantly ran downstairs and seen the fire and went back in the house to get my friend because he just had knee replacement. He's … we're still shaken up by it."

When asked about damage to the house, Chavez said, "Yes, lots of damage. He's got busted out windows. He has the door frame to the front door was blasted out, things off the bookshelves; a couple of pictures had fallen off. They haven't found any structure damage yet."

KSL's Rod Zundel was about 2 miles away from the blast. He said, "You can't even imagine the power that that thing entails. I've never felt anything in 20 years here, all through the explosions at the refineries, that was the biggest blast that I've ever felt or heard."

Ben Alley, a resident of Bountiful, said he felt his whole house shake when the explosion happened. Alley says he lives 4 miles away from the refineries, on Bountiful's East bench.

Vi Monsen lives near the Camelot mobile home park in North Salt Lake. She called us to ask what happened, saying her house shook as well.

A man named Brian told KSL Newsradio he was working at his shop about two blocks away from the Silver Eagle Refinery when he heard an explosion and the building shook. He reported seeing flames 20 to 30 feet high, but said emergency crews appeared to be knocking down the fire fairly quickly.

Another man called into the Doug Wright show and said the shaking from the explosion reminded him of the 1989 earthquake in Los Angeles, which he experienced.

Previous trouble at Silver Eagle

In January of this year, fumes leaking under a storage tank ignited and caused an explosion and fire. It took about 11 hours to put that fire out. Five people were injured in that incident, including four who suffered serious burns.

In 2007 a steel pipe at the refinery burst, spraying diesel fuel into a furnace. No one was injured in that incident.

In 2005 a tube inside a furnace ruptured, causing a fire. No one was injured.

Oops! Looks like a long history of woe there. Located on an ancient Indian burial ground perhaps?
