What we have now are kids who know all about homosexual parents but can't find their city on a world map. They know all about text messaging but can't write a coherent paragraph to save their lives. The teenagers working in the stores can't figure out the correct change if the computerized cash register doesn't tell them the amount.
So yes, we need to get back to kids actually knowing something like how to add and subtract, multiply and divide and having a broad vocabulary. |

Yep, ya just got to love modern education. Here is your brain on steroids synapsing at WARP speed but with no fund of knowledge the output is the square root of 0. What an out and out unadulterated crock of SHIT. |

Well, as far as I can tell, 'intelligence' is still measured by what you know... don't know anything? Can't be very intelligent, then, can you? And I'm also going to go so far as to say that it's not how you use your brain, but whether you use your brain (which will be a definite switch from the current 'thanks, but no,- saving it for later when they pay me to think' attitude which seems to prevail) that will make the difference in the future. The only thing most people really need to know about how to use your brain is that if you sit on it consistently, it tends to hamper the thought process. |

INTELLIGENCE IS MORE THAN JUST ABOUT MEMORY WORK. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 816742

Of course it is! You just made my case in your last reply. Cutting and pasting are learned memorized attributes. The quality of the same depends upon ones skill. The second is NOT POSSIBLE without the first. We as humans operate from the known and build from there. No knowns (math/history/English/science) no base upon which to structure ones skill to use this intelligence. This stupid move in education is predicated upon the BULLSHIT that the future of the US is going to be built on THINKERS and the rest of the world will do the building. This is BULLSHIT in its purest form. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 773494 11/18/2009 6:03 PM | | Re: The Three R's have been replaced by the need to customize education. | Quote | Education -- I could scream! Parents demand their little darlings get A's and B's. If they see an A or B, the little darling is "schmart" -- if they get the C or D which is more likely what he deserves, the moms are calling up the school blasting the teacher for not teaching him. Never mind that the little brat has the attention of a peanut because he was raised on TV. Never mind that the parents work and farmed him out to childcare which lacks enrichment. Never mind that he has been spoiled. Never mind that he is given chemical-filled garbage to eat on a daily basis. Never mind that mom and pop don't expect anything out of him as far as work goes nor have they taught him to take responsibility for his own actions. Then, the rest of us have kids who suffer because they are stuck in the same classes with these brats, which take up a good portion of the teacher's time. Because of the economy, our laws are allowing more and more kids per classroom. States have decided that classrooms must be differentiated because all kids don't have the same learning style and are at different levels, so now the teacher must teach about six lessons at once. ADDA mandates special education students spend a majority of their time in the regular education classroom, which further takes up the teacher's time. Our classrooms are a mess! I'm rambling, but it is bad in our schools. |
