Digging For Truth...(If you live outside the USA, please tell us about your country's health care system...)
Quote

This thread is meant to get to the bottom of this health care argument (that being the grass is greener) and hopefully straight from the horse's mouth, or so to speak. Please, no role playing or shilling on this thread.

With GLP's vast and global patronage, I'm hoping we can glean some truth on this thread.

Also please post how it's being paid for. If taxes, how much, if government subsidies, how much? Etc.

Thank you!

And please also posts likes and dislikes, pros and cons. That sort of thing, in order to really paint us a picture of how we do or don't measure up with the rest of the world in regards to our own health care system.

I live in the Netherlands. We pay about 110$ a month for healtcare. Pretty much everything is covered with that. Medicine, dentist, glasses, medical care... everything.

And it is obligated to have an insurance, you cannot walk around without healthinsurance. And that's a good thing. Otherwise everybody else would pay for your medical care through increased taxes.

forgot to explain:
at Vienna University two weeks ago a sudden strike for education was started, despite establishment resistance, now it has taken the whole country starting from Kindergarden to most of the Universities. Supporting strikes started in Germany, supporters arrived from Italy, Hungary and eventually supporters from the whole world, London, New York are expected to join. Needless to say police forces are watching and trying to put an end. These strikes erupted spoataniously and were not organized by any party, live streams were added later.

Here in Australia, we have Medicare - which covers a wide range of free medical services that include GP doctors through to surgery and emergency medicine.

Every Australian (and visitors with reciprocal rights) can access medicare services and see a doctor, be treated in hospital and access subsidised medicines and treatments.

Those who are employed contribute a 1.5% levy via the tax system however all Australians, employed or not, still have access to Medicare.

Private insurance is taken out by many people who seek to have extra services and treatments such as private hospitals, choice of doctors, modalities like acupuncture, massage, dental and many other things.

There is talk about dental care being included in the medicare system which is very much needed given the high costs of dental work, often prohibitive to many people and the impact this then has on other health problems.

Even under Saddam Hussein, Iraq offered its citizens free dental care.

I think most Australians, if not all... are certainly very happy we have the Medicare system and cannot understand how the USA has not adopted a similar system decades ago. The huge polarisation and division now in the US over the issue is confusing and perplexing to many Australians and Europeans who both need and enjoy the assistance of Medicare type health systems.

Private health insurance co-exists. Health professionals all make good money and a good living and the way a universal health care system is attacked by some in the US as being a socialist, communist type policy is incredible.

Perhaps in addition to asking people from other countries what system we use - someone in the US could perhaps try and explain to us why on earth would anyone want to preserve and keep the US health system the way it currently is. I simply dont see how, as the richest nation on earth - it serves the interest of American people as an efficient, effective health care system.

I used the current exchange rate of $1.65 = £1.

In the UK we have the National Health Service(NHS)which means medical care is free for EVERYONE including people who fly in from other countries were medical services aren't free, have treatment and then fly home ! (They're called medical tourists and are lovely socialist goverment don't try to stop them)

However, In the south of England you can't see a dentist as they have all left the NHS and you will wait anything upto 1 year to see a specialist if your diagnosed with cancer say.
(yes, Mr Jones you have prostate cancer, can you come in say November 2010 ?)

To pay for this wonderful service ! I pay $990 tax and NI out of my $3465 monthly salary.

Then I pay 17.5% VAT on 99.9% of purchases I make IE beer, pizza, TVs, carpet, food, etc

Oh hang on,.........then I pay $1.75 per LITRE for petrol, thats $6.73 per gallon because its taxed as well.

Oh, they're introducing tax on broadband soon as well and flying out of the country is taxed.

Oh, Theres also a road tunnel toll here in Liverpool were it costs $2.31 each way, so $4.62 to get to work and back or thats $92.40 amonth. (We have a river cutting the area in two, there isn't a bridge and if you want to go round its a 40 mile trip).

So, basically my missus & me have a monthly income of $5775 and we're normally broke at the end of the month !

Ok for the health system, I would be proud of having a system that serves everyone.
Been to London this year from the EU, wouldn’t want to live there all year round, but its
great for some time, lol
if your 60+ you may apply for free travelservice, have free health care, british Library is open seven days a week, has millions of books for your disposal to save you from boredom, pay around LB 45,- for a double room per week round Green Street, get it without reservation, so UK is OK for some time of the year, yeah

I am from the UK wheather your rich or poor health care is free in the UK and it is paid for through our taxes when we work, even if you do not work the health care system is still free, that's how our health care system is going to be destroyed because dirty immigrants from other countries come over here to live and they get instant free care. Thats why our system is collapsing because of these low lifes, packi's shitarse yelllow belly iraq's somalians, africans, lazy polish scum , dirty brown turks, and every other half breed come to the UK for social security benefits and free health care and they have never done a dys work in the UK .
