I have reasearched the AQ Khan network and posted about my research. I believe AQ Khan was not only selling completed nuclear devices, but electronic blueprints for advanced nuclear warhead design have been recoverd at different locations around the world.
Iran has had nuclear weapons for several years. Why the rush to attack now? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 442346
I agree that they have had the plans from Khan as has every radical islamist group or country in the world.
The reason for the rush to do "something" which may or may not be an attack is that now Iran is actually utilizing the technnology Khan provided. Not only with their enriched uranium but now they have a delivery system. And they continue to enhance all daily. |

This NY Times article is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg:
"Four years after his confession, international inspectors and Western officials confronted a new mystery over who may have received blueprints for a sophisticated and compact nuclear weapon found on his network's computers. Investigators know that the network sold uranium enrichment technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya, but are still pursuing leads that he may have done business with other countries.
Dr. Khan is an expert in centrifuges used to produce enriched uranium for bomb fuel, and much of the technology he sold involved enrichment. But it was only in the spring of 2008 that officials began to confirm that they had found the electronic design for a bomb itself among material seized from some of Dr. Khan's top lieutenants."

Hmm...
Islamic fundie slaughters unarmed US troops, Israel intercepts a huge load of arms destined for Palestien from Iran, Iran tests a nuclear device.
MSM is ramping up the reasons for an attack. Quoting: DanfromtheHills
I agree, the timing suggests a connection. |

Part of me thinks that the Obama administration is just naive the other part of me thinks this is all done on purpose. |

You are such a sad individual - Iran's leader openly admits he's going to destroy Israel & that they have no right to exist. Who's the war monger, asshole? I'm so sick of you backwards idiots. Hop on your camel & ride off to a cave, it's where you belong. |

Thats the way to go .. level playing field .. duke it out. |

Iranian scientists may have tested high-explosive components of the design. Quoting: Frostradamus
That means nothing, there are bluprints on wikipedia, the design of the device is simple, its enriching the material which is the hard part, it means iran has tested an implosion device, some engineers could probably rig that up in the shed/workshop.
There was a guy who built a breeder nuclear reactor in his garage at 17 years old.
Obviously thats an extreme example but anybody with some college level nuclear chemistry/physics knowledge could atempt that, the difference is most are not stupid enough, not to mention the fact its illegal.

Dont worry, even if iran has tested the design they are essentially building a car chasis without actually even having an engine in the first place.
They have basically built a slightly advanced implosion chamber inside a box.
In 2009, Its hardly supprising at all, i would actually imagine at least most of the goverments of the world would be able to atempt this part of a nuclear weapon design, many science universities would be able to do this and some engineers would be able to do this in workshops/sheds.
The worrying part is how far or to what level are Iran enriching the uranium, and are they building breeder reactors to produce fissiable isotopes.
Yeah its slightly worrying iran may have ambitions to build nuclear weapons that are small enough to fit on a cruise missle, instead of them being the size of a small truck.

<SNIP>
As anyone who has ever been around a nuclear enrichment facility that deals with Uranium enrichment will know, it takes MASSIVE amounts of electric power to power all those thousands of centrifuges needed to produce enriched uranium ... thus by looking at where electric lines go and measuring how much electricity is moving along them one can easily determine if there is an enrichment process being done (one reason why Chenney and Bush were lying out their asses about Iraq trying to make Uranium enriched weapons ... there was no electricity disappearing from the Iraqi electric grid and NO electric lines going somewhere that would indicate that was where THOUSANDS of power hungry centrifuges were at work).
<SNIP> Quoting: Anonymous Coward 713601
The flaw in this part of your argument and spytech is you cannot always follow the power lines. Power is easily produced on site by old school diesel or fuel oil generators. These are easily hidden. I know of a data center with 38,000kW of diesel backup power and you'd never know if someone didn't take you inside. Nice and tidy!
Just sayin'... |

Hmmmm... wonder how far we can push before they push back, right? By doing this stuff, it seems like they are just begging to be struck by Israel. Maybe thats what they really want. Especially if Iran things they can win, but isn't stupid enough to throw the first punch. |

Perhaps in their over zealousness to go "green", the West is reading too much into their "bomb making". I say wait for them to nuke someone before becoming all unglued. |

* War is deception.

Some fissable isotopes have legitimate other uses.
The question is are Iran trying to mass large amounts of very pure fissiable isotopes?
