Republicans Rally Resistance to Health Care Bill, as House Vote Nears

Republicans host a rally against Democrats' health care reform, calling on those who attend to track down their elected representatives in Congress and put pressure on them to think twice about voting for the more than $1 trillion health care overhaul.

As a crowd of protesters shouted "kill the bill," House Republicans on Thursday rallied opposition against the Democrats' health care legislation, even as President Obama touted two major endorsements from doctors and seniors groups.

The president interrupted the daily press briefing Thursday to note that the American Medical Association and AARP had just endorsed House Democrats' health care plan.

"This is no small endorsement," Obama said of the AARP's backing. "They know it's a good deal for our seniors."

At the same time, Republicans decried the bill on the steps of Congress in a last-ditch bid to derail or at least delay the legislation heading toward a possible vote Saturday.

Thousands of protesters arrived by bus for the rally, which the GOP is calling an emergency "House Call." The event drew the conservative "tea party" activists but unlike past rallies was officially sanctioned by House Republicans.

Click here to view the slideshow.

Republicans want those who attend to track down their elected representatives in Congress and put pressure on them to think twice about voting for the more than $1 trillion health care overhaul pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"They're going to listen," said Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., who originally called for the rally. "The biggest voice in the United States is your voice."

Republicans were formally unveiling their version of a health care reform bill Thursday.

They are looking to reprise the kind of grassroots resistance that boiled up during the August recess at town hall meetings across the country. That resistance seemed to temper Democrats' ambitions for health care reform and just about dash any hope for passing a government-run insurance plan as part of the package. But just a few months later, both the House and Senate have included so-called public options in their bills.

Bachmann said before the rally that the "lessons" of the town halls have been lost.

"Republicans are in the minority, but a minority in Congress plus the American people equals the majority," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., told Fox News Thursday.

Actors Jon Voight and Jon Ratzenberger stirred up the crowd in the early afternoon. Ratzenberger warned about "socialism" creeping in, as Voight decried the "radical Chicago tactics" of the Obama administration. Meanwhile, nine protesters were arrested in a Senate office building for unlawful entry, according to the U.S. Capitol Police.

Republicans say they want to kill the bill with Thursday's rally. But it's unclear how much of an impact the "House Call" can have so late in the process. Pelosi needs to unify Democrats around the package but does not need Republican support given the Democratic majority in the House.

The Republicans have put forward their own version of health care reform as an alternative, but the Congressional Budget Office estimated that their plan -- while keeping premiums down and costing a mere fraction of the cost of the Democrats' bill -- would cover only 3 million more Americans. The Democrats' bill is projected to cover 36 million.

"That's a very big difference," Pelosi told reporters Thursday, criticizing the GOP version for not prohibiting insurance companies from discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions.

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami blasted the GOP plan in a brief memo Wednesday night.

"Bottom line: Americans lose and insurance companies win under the Republican plan," he said.

The AARP endorsement could help blunt some of the criticism directed at them over planned Medicare cuts. Democratic sources confirmed to Fox News that President Obama plans to meet with House Democrats Friday on Capitol Hill.

But Pelosi and her deputies are still trying to secure Democratic votes, with disputes over federal funding for abortion and other issues causing a split. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told wire reporters Thursday that Democrats will have the 218 votes needed when the bill comes up.

Republicans, though, are hoping their wins Tuesday in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races will give moderate Democrats pause about supporting the 1,900-page bill. They continue to warn that the plan will drive up the cost of private plans and lead to crippling and persistent deficits.

"A lot of Blue Dogs in this country are going to have a lot of 'splaining to do back at home in their districts, where people do not want the health care that's being peddled by this administration," Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told Fox News. "They don't want government control. They don't want a government option."

The Senate, where Democrats have a slighter majority, is not progressing quite as fast. There are emerging doubts over whether the Senate can bring a bill to the floor by the end of the year.

Time is short! The House will vote TOMORROW, Saturday, November 7. Tell your U.S. Representative today to vote NO on this costly and dangerous government takeover of healthcare.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote TOMORROW on H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) disastrous healthcare reform bill.

I urge you, if you haven't already, to tell your U.S. Representative that you OPPOSE this absolutely unaffordable government takeover of healthcare!

As if the original House healthcare reform bill that sparked outrage at congressional town hall meetings in August weren’t bad enough, Speaker Pelosi has now crafted a 1,990-page regulatory and fiscal nightmare.

H.R. 3962 poses a fundamental threat not only to our nation’s and your own financial health and prosperity, but to every American’s individual liberties and right to free choice!

According to an initial estimate by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), H.R. 3962 will cost our country a minimum of $894 billion over 10 years. Robert Pear of The New York Times reported on October 30, “By the most commonly used yardstick, the bill would cost $1.05 trillion over 10 years.” Historically, healthcare programs have cost more than predicted -- in 1990 Medicare spending was nearly 10 times what was originally estimated in 1967 -- and this is the biggest healthcare plan in history.

Quite frankly, America cannot afford even the minimum price tag for Speaker Pelosi’s healthcare scheme when the federal deficit stands at an all-time record and the national debt is projected to nearly double over the next 10 years.

What’s more, President Obama has said that his healthcare “reform” will cut costs in the long run, but CBO’s preliminary analysis of H.R. 3962 found that the bill would bend the federal cost curve for healthcare UP, not down.

H.R. 3962 would also inflict a whole host of new taxes and costly mandates on individuals and businesses as American families struggle to make ends meet and unemployment approaches double digits.

For example, the bill would impose an individual mandate tax of up to 2.5 percent of income on individuals earning as little as $9,350 who do not purchase “acceptable health care coverage.” The National Federation of Independent Business estimates that the employer mandate in H.R. 3962 will disproportionately affect small businesses, triggering up to 1.6 million lost jobs. The direct impact on families of all the new rules, regulations, and tax increases will be an additional $500 per year in the cost of insurance.

And I can’t believe I’m saying this, sophia, but the financial burden of this healthcare plan to our government and the costs to American businesses, taxpayers, and our economy aren’t even the worst of it.

The most dangerous part of Speaker Pelosi’s healthcare “reform” bill is that it paves the way to a complete government takeover of healthcare in this country that will dramatically expand the size of government; allow bureaucrats and politicians to dictate your choice of doctors, treatments, and medicines; and ration quality care to control costs.

H.R. 3962 creates 111 new federal boards, bureaucracies, commissions, and programs. It also expands Medicaid to all individuals with incomes below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, an estimated 10 million Americans.

President Obama has repeatedly vowed that "if you like your health plan, you can keep it,” but the so-called “public health insurance option” that Speaker Pelosi included in her bill at the urging of her pro-socialized medicine backers will quickly undermine private insurance by undercutting its costs. A study earlier this year by The Lewin Group, a respected economics consulting firm, projected that 83.4 million Americans would lose the private coverage they have today if a “public option” becomes law.

On top of everything else, Speaker Pelosi proposes to pay for this government takeover of healthcare with massive cuts to Medicare. Those include more than $170 billion in cuts to Medicare Advantage Plans that will gut the program, forcing the more than 10 million seniors who opt for it back into traditional fee-for-service Medicare, which has higher out-of-pocket expenses.

Make no mistake. With these cuts to Medicare coming as the Baby Boomers are retiring and the program is facing bankruptcy in just seven years, seniors will be the first to experience rationing and a decline in their quality of care!

sophia, that’s why it’s so vitally important that you tell your U.S. Representative to vote NO on H.R. 3962 today!

If we don’t succeed in blocking this very dangerous government takeover of our healthcare, you and I and all Americans will have no choice but to live under the mandates, restrictions, and rationing that federal bureaucrats and politicians in Washington will impose to curb costs.

The goal of Speaker Pelosi and her pro-socialized medicine backers is clear: to put all Americans under a single-payer, government-run healthcare system, like those in Canada and Great Britain, that will dictate our choice of doctors, treatments, and medicines and ration the care we can receive.

Time is short! The House will vote TOMORROW, Saturday, November 7. Tell your U.S. Representative today to vote NO on this costly and dangerous government takeover of healthcare.

if this was real health care reform that would be one thing, as in universal free care for all legal citizens, but this is just about control.. forcing people to buy their own private insurance.. pure bullshit.

This battle is about money, you have it and they want it.

People better wake up or you are going to see some dramatic changes and it won't be for your good. Sort-a like the bailouts. You got nothing.
It is time to awaken to your real purpose. It is all up to you.

More from the DC Patriot Rally: Can You Hear Us Now, Washington?

Posted by The MaryHunter at November 5, 2009 5:52 PM

These pictures were shot by my friend and neighbor Patriot Tim, who attended with a friend from Alaska. Both went to visit AK Congressman Don Young in the morning to discuss ObamaCare and other liberty-stripping moves by Obama's pet Democrat Congress. Then, they attended the rally with thousands of attendees. "The talks were great: Levin, Bachmann, a couple dozen congressmen and women... everyone was energized like for the 9/12 March," said Tim, a veteran of the Patriot League trying to take back America from the political hacks--both Republican and Democrat--running our nation into the ground. He went on:

I tried to get into Pelosi's Palace [aka the Cannon Building] but the line went around the building. I also heard the capitol Gestapo wouldn't let people into her office. Thousands are in the house office buildings right now ripping heads off those stealing our freedoms. Hannity should have it all on his show tonight.

They went to Princess Pelosi's Palace...

...on and on they came, but apparently she was not taking visitors.

More from the rally:

Whether or not this protest march gets nudged off of the MSM Obama Propaganda Machine "News" tonight and tomorrow morning, it won't be lost on those of us who wished we could attend. And it had better not be lost on those (many now without heads) who would continue to steal our freedoms if left unchecked.

The answer is "NO" they can't (i.e. WON'T) here you now.

Congress is going to stick it's finger in America's eye, like it or not. They are going to say "Screw the Constitution, screw the will of the people, WE won, YOU lost, get over it!"

2010, baby.

(Not that I'm conspiratorial, but what EXCELLENT timing to have that Moslem gunman kill our troops at a base on U.S. soil.)

AHHHHHH YES, we have Dino. Hanging on to what little is left. So much in denial that he fails to see the true ramifications of Tuesdays elections.

We will see what lame excuses you will have in 2010. You just had but a taste of what's yet to come this past Tuesday.

WE surround you, Dino.
