Russia threatens to supply Iran with top new missile system as 'cold war' escalates

Russia is deploying the threat to sell a "game changing" air defence system to Iran as a high stakes bargaining chip in its new "cold war" with America, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.
US intelligence fears the Kremlin will supply the sophisticated S-300 system to Tehran if Washington pushes through Nato membership for its pro-Western neighbours Georgia and Ukraine.

The proposed deal is causing huge alarm in the US and Israel as the S-300 can track 100 targets at once and fire on planes up to 75 miles away.

That would make it a "game-changer", greatly improving Iranian defences against any air strike on its nuclear sites, according to Pentagon adviser Dan Goure. "This is a system that scares every Western air force," he said.

Senior US intelligence operatives believe that Russia is planning to use a stand-off over the S-300 to create a foreign policy showdown that would test the mettle of a new US president.

I know, I am looking at so much rhetoric on both side regarding the Iran issue and it's not looking good!

This latest development with Iran testing a nuclear trigger device could literally be the triggering event!

Russia has stated often that it will not tolerate an attack against Iran and is also on record as saying that pre-emptive nuclear action is possible! The US has stated that it will defend Israel against attack and Israel is talking big about attacking Iran over the whole nuclear issue!

So, as I said, it's not looking good!

IAEA seeks explanation from Iran on nuclear weapon implosion device
The Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has requested a response from Iran in regard to evidence that the country has experimented with the creation of advanced implosion devices designed for use in nuclear weapons.

The report, which was compiled by using the data of numerous intelligence agencies over an extended period charges that Iranian scientists have been working on creating the components in a “two-point implosion” device. Such a device is used to bring about the chain reaction in a nuclear fission warhead. Furthermore, the device would be smaller than other nuclear implosion devices, which would in turn give Iran the ability to create much smaller warheads and therefore require a smaller missile system to deliver it to its target.

“Possible Military Dimensions of Iran's Nuclear Program” is a report which the IAEA had previously released segments. However, this new information was not disclosed until now.

IAEA Director General IAEA Mohamed ElBaradei stated that the information obtained is regarded as reliable because it "appears to have been derived from multiple sources over different periods of time, appears to be generally consistent, and is sufficiently comprehensive and detailed that it needs to be addressed by Iran."

Since the United States’ faulty intelligence on Saddam Hussein and Iraq’s nuclear ambitions prior to the Iraq war, the IAEA has been more thorough in its evaluation of intelligence gained from the international community.

Iran claims that the development of such implosion devices is for civilian applications; however, according the Guardian they have thus far not supplied any information on such uses. No civilian uses are known to the international community.

Despite this evidence of a secondary nature as to the nuclear ambitions of Iran, the IAEA’s ElBaradei stated to the New York Times that Iran’s uranium enrichment site at Fordo was “nothing to be worried about.” He added, “The idea was to use it as a bunker under the mountain to protect things. It’s a hole in a mountain.”

The IAEA is expected to release its official report on their inspection of the Fordo enrichment facility to the United Nations in mid-November.

Iran contends that the Fordo site is merely a fall back site in case their primary uranium enrichment facility (Natanz) is attacked by another country such as Israel.

Not only that, but based on news reports it seems Russia changes its mind on an hourly basis as to whether or not it wants to go through with the sale...

As they say - the writing is on the wall!!! Virtually all sides are talking pre-emptive action! Everyone is waiting for someone else to blink or twitch and inevitably someone will! Then it's game on for real! I don't believe it will stop at a limited nuclear exchange.

Israel says still has military option on Iran 21 Sep 2009 10:47 GMT
Source: Reuters
* "All options still on table" against Iran, Israel says

* Official dismisses Russian suggestion of Peres assurance

* Army chief also says "all options" open to defend Israel

(Adds comment from military chief)

By Alastair Macdonald

JERUSALEM, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Israel has not given up the option of a military response to Tehran's nuclear programme, senior officials said on Monday, after Russia's president said his Israeli counterpart assured him it would not attack Iran.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon was asked by Reuters if that comment by Israeli President Shimon Peres, as reported on Sunday by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, was a guarantee there would be no Israeli strike on Iran.

Ayalon replied: "It is certainly not a guarantee.

"I don't think that, with all due respect, the Russian president is authorised to speak for Israel and certainly we have not taken any option off the table."

Echoing that, the chief-of-staff of Israel's armed forces, Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi, later told Army Radio when pressed on whether Israel could attack Iran: "Israel has the right to defend itself and all options are on the table."

Israel has long dismissed Iranian assurances that its nuclear programme is not intended to produce weapons and has said it would not tolerate such a level of armament in the Islamic Republic, which is avowedly hostile to the Jewish state.

A Kremlin transcript of an interview Medvedev gave to CNN last Tuesday quoted him as saying that an attack on Iran would lead to "a humanitarian disaster" and risk provoking retaliation against Israel that would also affect other nations.

"But my Israeli colleagues told me that they were not planning to act in this way and I trust them," Medvedev added.

During a meeting on the Black Sea in August, Peres, a former prime minister whose current role is largely ceremonial, had told him Israel would not attack Iran, Medvedev said.

"Israeli President Peres said something important for us all: 'Israel does not plan to launch any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country and we will not do this'," Medvedev said.

Russia plays a role in the stand-off between Israel and Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who made an unannounced visit to Moscow this month, has been keen that Russia not sell anti-aircraft missiles to Tehran and also that Moscow support international sanctions against Iran.

Last week, a former senior Israeli defence official told Reuters that Israel would be compelled to attack Iran's nuclear facilities if the international powers had not agreed by the end of this year on crippling sanctions to force Tehran's hand.

The only real threats in the world today are the US and Israel. Don't get me wrong - I love my country but unfortunately we have criminals running the government.

Russia needs to quit fucking around and start selling selling the S300 and nukes to Iran. The only way to stop the naked aggression of Israel and the US is for a nation to arm up.
