What sinks creationism (or ID) is that it cannot be disproven. What many people forget (or never learn) is that science isn't just about proving things, but also describing how to disprove things.

I also think that many scientists are comfortable being great scientists and having a belief system, but keeping them separate (as Dr. Miller does).
