No use in the common battle fields.
Close quarter combat is too close for a weapon like this. Try a tactical shotgun
Longer range engagements where you have more room? Use assault rifles out to ranges of 200 meters.
Beyond this? Scope high powered rifles.
Assuming we're in a Mad Max scenario w/out guns or ammo, I would go for spear type weapons. They're stand off and have tremendous piercing capability. Defense is just as important as offense. What good is a broad sword against a guy who has a 10ft long 12 lb. spear? You can't even get close to him. Bow/arrow is good, but again, that is a pure offensive weapon. In close it is worthless. Go for a nice heavy spear and short sword, dirk, or K-bar for hugging and killing up close. |

I have a katana. I figure that if I catch someone breaking into my car, and I run them through, maybe no-one will hear it. Neighborhood gets to sleep, I don't have to clean HIV infected brain matter out of my upholstery. |

Broad swords, are not really that good for combat. Usually swords, on the battle field are used for two man combat.
Curved swords were invented, for use on horse back, staight swords are much better, unless your on a horse then their pretty much useless.
Actually, nothing is better on the battle field than a straight spear, I have 3. A spiralling strike by a long spear of 11 to 12 feet long has the impact to kill even if it doesn't penetrate armour. Spears, were usually the prefered form of weapon used on the battle field in ancient times, they metamophosized into the Pike.
Pikemen, were superior to swordsmen, no matter what you see on T.V..
Swords are good for duelling, but not that good, on the battle field. |

Broadswords are also HEAVY and require physical effort to weild. they are a bashing or bludgeoning weapon, not stabbing or cutting.
Even when popular in the middle ages, they were only useful against armoured personnel.
If you require a sword type weapon, you'd be better off with a katana-style weapon, light weight, able to shift directions easily, and not requiring physical stamina to handle. Also SHARP and able to slice off body parts like a razor. |

saber is lighter as a broadsword unlikely for most that I see-
most are too weak to effectively wield a broadsword
sad but true
crossbow would be easier to wield and keep distance good tool when dealing with bodily fluids-as long as one is adept...or archery...even a staff...looks benign
few women could wield a sabre or foil...let alone broadsword
now a staff is another thing...or a high end slingshot...

The only purpose I can see in a broadsword is for taking the head off of a cop who is wearing body armor and also happened to run out of ammo. |

i've used a katana for years. great weapon. i've also used the two handed scottish claymore for years. another great weapon. for training i wield it one handed. neither is much good in enclosed spaces and worthless at 10 yards. the spear or pike is a weapon i've trained to defeat with the sword. not hard to kill the wielder once ye get past the end. and they can't use it up close either. |

not imo. each has its own strength and weakness. hard to beat the steel the katana is made from though. and i'm not talking about the cheap 440 replicas either. the japanese blades. i've got one 1,000 years old. i'd gladly carry it in combat with no reservations. and a gun. cause blades don't reach out too far. |

long as we're on the topic, all swords are not created equal. just because it is shaped like a sword don't make it a user. a good sword has a balance and liveliness ye won't find in most of the garbage floating around. not to mention, if ye don't know how to use it ye aren't going to be effective even with a good sword. it's a lot harder to learn the sword than it is to learn to shoot. and harder yet to find a good sword. a good one will not wear ye out near so fast as a crappy made one. and a good one will not break so easily either.
