So I have to clean my gutters...Do I do it myself, and risk breaking my neck, or hire some Day Laborers?

Get some strippers to do it
It's chilly in SF today...They probably won't wear bikinis while working.
Then have them wear short skirts so you can look up them while they climb the ladder.
I could just pull up a patio chair, with some brandy, and enjoy the view!

See thats the damn problem. While 3 are cleaning the gutters you are in the house with the best looking one. |

Always hire.
They make money, you don't go to the hospital.
I'm looking for someone to remove a ton of oak leaves off in acre of property. Unfortunately it's hilly and rocky and slippery...my landlord is crazy. Says I have to remove the leaves atmy expense (physical opr financial)..I'm a 55 year old woman with a sprained knee- which I sprained on the rocky slope up to the house. I need freakin' cleats and a ski pole out here.

Why do the leaves have to be removed? They are a natural part of the landscape. Is ther some local law about it? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 793418
No, I'm way out in the country.
Landlord just doesn't want the property to appear 'unkempt'.
And the trees are thick, all oaks and there's a 7" deep blanket of leaves over everything, underneath that is a layer of huge acorns and rocks.. It's dangerous walking. And the acorns, jeeze! I got pelted everytime I stepped outside.
Oh yeah... if I DO get the leaves raked up, wtf would I do with them? It would be a massive amount.
I'll sweep off the rocky path leading to house. That's it.
Landlord's coming by Monday morning to see how things are going.
LOL...good luck finding the driveway.
He's crazy. |

I have a 2-story house. About 25 feet to the top gutter, and it'll take me all day, plus I'll probably fall.
Thinking of getting about 4 or 5 day laborers over at Lowe's to do it in a few hours for a couple hundred $$.
Opinions? Quoting: pud
You're lazy, pud, get your sorry ass out there and do it yourself. just be careful. Jees, no wonder you can't get a woman, you need a momma. Heavily medicated for your safety! |

If the roof isn't too steep to walk on, then take a blower up there and you'll be done in 15 minutes.
If it's not walkable, then move the ladder around the perimeter and clean eight-foot sections at a time - either by hand (with a glove!), or with some kind of implement (a spade attached to a stick.) This should take an hour at most. |

We use medium-sized trash bags to contain the debris. Just take a bag up the ladder with you and fill it up. You could fill ten bags depending on how much debris. Use the debris for compost.
Stick a hose down the downspouts to unclog them.
A blower makes clean-up a breeze at the end. |

Metal roofs are a completely different animal. I busted my ass once. Be very careful on metal roofs. Just stay on the ladder unless the metal roof is virtually flat.
If you have cheap shingles, you'll find a deep layer of shingle gravel in your gutters. Just leave it unless it's obstructing the flow.
OK, you're all set! Don't die! |

Things like Workman's comp, Property insurance, etc should be had by any 'contractor' who does any work for you, this way should any accident take place it is not you who has to pay for it.
Sadly the law is such if anyone slips and falls on your front lawn while walking by your house, they can now sue YOU.
Since gutters are there and always will be there to clean, you might want to seriously consider getting new gutters with those flip top leaf screens, or one of the newer types that allow the leaves to flow off the roof/gutter while capturing the water. |

The one system that appears to work is fully-enclosed except for a thin lip along the length which catches water but not debris. |

Is there something in the lease that says you have to remove them? Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
Psa 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
STOCK UP NOW. You should have at least 6 months worth of basics for every member of your household. Stay away from crowds when trouble starts, do not forget water storage, tobaccos worth more than gold or silver, and be kind to hungry children. |

Have you tried one that works?
I've read pros and cons about all of them.
I want to get guards that are reasonably priced and work.
Any info helpful

I hired 4 day laborers from Lowe's. I was surprised how few were out there. It used to be PACKED with them, but not today..maybe because I came a little later..not sure..
The "leader" of the four (Luis) negotiated a price with me. (I'm usually a tough negotiator, however, it's not like this was a several thousand dollar deal, so I wasn't too tough on him.) We agreed on $350 + lunch. (I ordered 3 pizzas from Pizza Hut, and let them have my beer at home.)
They worked damn hard! Finished in about 1 hr. 45 min. They had obviously done this many times before, and were very nice guys. I chatted with Luis a little, learned he and the other 3 workers share a place with their families..sounds cramp, and uncomfortable.
Anyway, I told them I'd try and find them when I needed other things done, and they seemed very happy with that .
Overall, I rate an A experience!
Thanks for all the help, friends!

Seamless gutters are certainly an option, I'm getting sick of worrying about this every year. I also like that robotic gutter cleaner, I posted a link to, a page back.
I'm not pro-illegal immigrant, however, I am pro-'fellow man', and as long as they're trying to better themselves, I'm okay with helping them out. The ones not working, and abusing our welfare system, make me angry.

Pud know Luis and his friends know the layout of your house and may case your house. Hopefully you didn't talk about your new gun or your new car. Also hope you didn't flash a lot of cash in front of them and please, don't say you paid by check.
A licensed contractor would have been a safer move and are bonded and insured.
Pud, you need to start being aware of how people will take advantage of you. I'm not saying be paranoid, just take extra steps to be cautious and alert. |

They weren't allowed inside at all, and I have a nice security system, and very aware neighbors. It's a very safe part of S.F., with a strong police presence, so I don't worry too much about prowlers.
Thanks though!
