It appears that the camera is repositioning, or rotating for proper up down position.... however... what I can't wrap my head around is, why are the stars NOT rotating???? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 751936

Look closely at the upper left corner. Looks like a giant ball of dirt. It has texture. That's not space.
Right? What's up with that???
yes that zone of the screen is much lighter than the other corners but i dont know, dust?

Alright, I think it was a camera/satellite glitch. Go to the archives tab (to the left) - [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]
Select SOHO Movie Theater and plug in the green one (EIT 195), just todays date 2009-11-07 to 2009-11-07 and hit the search button in the bottom right corner.
It will load up images for today, including the wonky time frame from about 18:47 till 19:32. After the flip, it is right back to normal.
Sigh...TEOTWAWKI is not today.

How do you explain in the same photo the sun is spinning with evident spherical trails but the stars in the background are still and do not rotate.
glitch is a poor explanation for something impossible, unless these shots are manipulated.

So can we get some experts to verify it's OK?
And I dont mean the flaky crazies that are going to get all new-agey and kill the thread.
I mean someone who understands the science of all this.
I believe it's camera optics. It could very well be the lenses and filters creating this effect.
What I don't understand is the why background is not rotating.
The rotation of the prominence could be explained by the Camera rotation during backout, but it's the background (stars, etc) I'm puzzled over. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 751936
he only explanation may be that these are not stars. These little things are on CCD, so they stay in place while the camera (and CCD) rotates. Say, irregular cooling across CCD may be in effect. Like dead pixels or whatever. This thing is really sensitive. |

THOSE THINGS IN THE BACKGROUND ARE NOT STARS.
There are no comets, UFOs etc in the vicinity of the Sun.
Imagine anything in teperature like 1 000 000 K.
These things are on the CCD.

Like most celestial bodies, the sun SPINS, you know... If you take a time-lapse photo of it's movement, you get the picture in question. And the stars appear stationary because while they are also moving, they are rotating much slower than the sun, from a fixed point of view.
Simple.

Its hard to find any data on this , cant access the rest of Nov -- I have never seen Soho do this before, they gently turn things , not a spin like that. Tis a puzzle.

Funny how the sequence of updates has changed. Before the wackiness started the updates were posted in sequence:
1) EIT 171
2) EIT 284
3) EIT 195
4) EIT 304
Now all of a sudden, the only update to any images that SOHO is showing is to the EIT 195 scope. Coincidentally, this update is not only out of sequence and the only one within a similar update timeframe as most other updates(usually they all get updated within a relatively close period), but it also shows everything as now being all honkey-dorey. fishy fishy fishy |

It is also interesting to note that the disturbance in the sun's surface that was previously located over the left side of the southern pole is now located below the right side of the northern pole, as it would be if the sun flipped itself over. |
