Those "swooshes" are called virga. Basically, ice crystals grow too large to be supported in the air with their smaller brethren in the cloud, and fall. Just like rain does, but it's ice. These are flat, hexagonal crystals for the most part, so are more easily carried by wind than rain would be. They sublime back into vapor long before reaching the ground.
