Hey Op...why do you keep repeating that video game over and over?

I've skipped all the nonsense and here, OP, is the real reason:

The older we get the more our neural pathways break down. The brain simply stops having direct access to a lot of it's memories. The more you go down one path, the stronger that path becomes, so by the time you're 70 or so you have a few well-travelled roads in the brain and the rest fall by the wayside and succomb to kudzu.

That's it in a nutshell.

You're lucky that you still have living grand parents, O.P.

If I was you, I'd try to engage her in conversation, and do my best to remember what she says, because once she's gone, her memories and experience are too

And over and over and over again? I'm talking to my grandma right now, and she keeps talking about the same thing over and over and has been for the pat 40 minutes, and I'm just like "yep", "Uh-huh", "okay", "oh". I don't want to be rude, but seriously I want to swan dive out the window right now.

Well I probably won't be around, but it will be funny as HELL when you get old, punk/punkette!

I strive to committ myself to never impose upon my kids or grandkids what I went through, and what I am going through. I want to be a wisened old crone who speaks very few words, but what words I do speak, will carry meaning. That's my hope for myself when I am old.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 725058

We all want that in our old age but then again you never know what the future will bring.
It almost sounds like your grandma is angry with you or has been for many years. You didn't say why you had druggie friends when you were young. Did you give granma a hard time when in your younger years? Were you on drugs youself. Usually granmas don't kick out their grandchild when they have a good relationship. There is more to your story than you are telling. If you don't want to talk to grannma tell her you are busy and have to go.

No. She's just that way. Out for dolo and money grubbing. I smoked at little weed here and there, but that's all. Does that count as a "drug"? Anyways, my boyfriend at the time saved my life. He's in jail now, but he was there for me when my own family turned their back on me, so I will always love him. If she's angry at me I don't know why. Because I was born? I didn't ask to come here. Never was much of a troublemaker, just a dreamer. Still am. I guess some shit is best laid to rest, because you're better off not knowing why.

We've studied this very thing in my Clinical Pastoral Education classes. There's research that's been done on this. All people do this type of thing though its most obvious in old people who retell the same story.

What old people are doing by repeating themselves is revealing where they are emotionally. The particular story(ies) she repeats are telling you what's really going on inside with her right now. They are called Metastories.

For example, let's say she's talking about a movie where everyone was trapped in a bunker. What she's really saying is that SHE feels trapped by her circumstances. "Grandma, do you feel a little like the people in the bunker?"

She's lived a long time and could think of thousands of stories to tell you but those particular stories are chosen by her for a reason and reveal much about how she's thinking and feeling. It is not just "senility." She doesn't even realize why she's repeating the same stories but its an opportunity for you to go past the story to open up a deeper and more intimate conversation with her about what's going on with her.

Listen for the emotion behind what she's saying.

Lol.. so I'm not going 'mad!!!!' after all... cos my Mother will not 'shut up!' constantly repeating the same stuff unless Emmerdale is on.. then it's 'shushhh! I'm watching this!'
My Dad never gets to the point, contradictes 'everything' I say, just mumbles away.. repeating stuff.. gets a bit excited.. then miserable again.. & then the annoying 'what? pardon? what was that? what do you mean? run.. jeeeeez!!!

The news channels like Sky, BBC, CNN also repeat the same friggin stuff every 15 mins, every hour.. all day & night.. like there's no other news in the world.. so they just 'blab' out the same bollox all day long. I hardly watch the news anymore.. just come to GLP.. where's there's pages of news.. in fact there's toooo much news on GLP.. Lol.. can't keep up!

Reminds me of the old Star Trek episode where this civilization was talking in perfect English but was all formatted according to events in their history, with regards to what information they were trying to get across.

Talking about crossing the plains of Acturia actually meant to be alone in this current struggle, for example.

You'll be doing it to eventually. We all either become old people or we die before then so get over yourself.

Re: Can anyone tell me why old people repeat the same shit over and over again?
Give her a recorder and tell her you want to have memories of her for later in your life and for your kids (and grandkids) to hear about her life - FROM HER! Ask her to narrate her entire life into the recorder and that you will archive the whole thing for future generations to hear. Make sure she has lots of tapes and batteries. Then you can play them into your computer and make mp3s and actually archive them for future generations. This will give her something to do with her important memories and keep her from calling you so much.

As for the recipes, get her a cheap fax machine, find the recipe and fax it to her.

Perhaps that is her intent and she wants you to jump.

j/k My mother does this because she has the beginnings of Alzheimer's Disease and even though she takes medication for it, some days are much worse than other days.

And I am thankful for each and every one of those days I have left with her.

R-Complex in the brain stem. Old people are very rarely 'awakened' so to speak.

Everything an oldie does is body DNA programming.
