Sure - I love this stuff. From 600-800AD there was what is called 'the first Little Ice Age', the Anglo-Saxon chroniclers describe "a time of teribble cold such that men have never known." The climate then warmed quickly in the great Viking expansion began in 950AD. They settled in Greenland and found a land well suited to agriculture, they even established vineyards. This is well recorded in the Viking Sagas. I personally read the original documents from the period recording grain and wine exports from Greenland to Denmark. A farm has recently been discovered at the head of a fiord that has been frozen for more than 500 years.

During this warm period (900-1200AD), now known as the Medieval Warm Period, the summers in Europe were very stable. There were few frosts and long growing seasons. The population exploded and is estimated to be have reached 120 million by 1250. The excess population was one of the reasons for the Crusades that swept out of Europe into the Middle East. However, this climate shift had terrible consequences for North and South America. The Mayan civilization suffered a terrible drought and collapsed suddenly. Likewise the southwest of North America appears to have endured a 200 year megadrought. The Anaszi civilization mysteriously disappeared. Tree trunks have been found at the bottom of lakes, still rooted in the lakebed, revealing that the lakes shrank to miniscule proportion compared to their current extent.
At the beginning of the 14th century another climate shift occurred. Europe was deluged with rain for 7 years. Crops failed or rotted. More than 20% of the population of Europe starved during the Great Famine of 1315-1322. This was followed swiftly by the Black Death. By the end of the century the population of Europe had been decimated, in some areas the population had been reduced by more than 60%. This lead to a collapse of the feudal system and the birth of the Renaissance. Some areas of Europe have still not reached the population levels seen in 1200AD.

Thank you. I too have an avid interest in history but leaned more to the cultural/sociological aspects but did not delve into the causal effects. These are great examples of why cultures thrive or die. |

I have been reading through the HARRY_READ_ME.txt file from the set of CRU data.
This 'project' seems to be being conducted by a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs from what I read so far.
The scripts differ internally but - you guessed it! - the descriptions at the start are identical. WHAT IS GOING ON? Given that the 'README_GRIDDING.txt' file is dated 'Mar 30 2004' we will have to assume that the originally-stated scripts must be used. Quoting: HARRY_READ_ME.txt
...Someone once explained to me what happens when you assume!
So what is this mysterious variable 'nf' that isn't being set? Well strangely, it's in Mark N's 'rdbin.pro'. I say strangely because this is a generic prog that's used all over the place! Nonetheless it does have what certainly looks like a bug: Quoting: HARRY_READ_ME.txt
...yeah, lets just move lines that outside an IF/ENDIF block to inside the IF/ENDIF, even though the code is "used all over the place!". Not exactly confidence boosting, is it?

I decided to mod the program to use the 'nostn' option if the length is 0. Hope that's right - the synthetics are read in first and the station data is added to that grid so this should be OK.. and it looks OK: Quoting: HARRY_READ_ME.txt

I tried using the 'stn' option of anomdtb.for. Not completely sure what it's supposed to do, but no matter as it didn't work: Quoting: HARRY_READ_ME.txt

We sure need to have rational scientific and economic discussions about those things. That doesn't look like happening soon though, since the climate alarmists are still saying that the global warming science is correct, and that billions of people are going to die from global warming.
The theory of manmade global warming is dead until the science is done properly. We need independent verification. Nobody can trust the CRU team any more. |
