The Royal family are a tradition. Government is and has been for some time controlled via Parliament mostly with the head of the Royal House (currently the Queen) making the final choices, and/or acting as adviser to the Prime Minister.

The Royal family keeps its traditional title and position in honor to centuries of history. Over 1000 years there has been Royalty in England/UK. Mind when you sit there and think about what she represents, its kind of hard to just shove her to the side and have done with royalty.

Her primary 'duties' are to uphold tradition and ceremony. In fact the Queen spends a good deal of her time passing out honors and medals than anything else. All with dignity and aplomb we have not seen in a president of the United states since Lincoln - and then that might just be history painting a pretty picture of him.

Her practical role however is that she is the head of state. Most nations have a head of state. She's the head of the armed forces, opens and closes the Parliament, and represents UK laws and customs while preventing any Prime Minister from potentially becoming tyrannical.

They could give her head of state powers to a president and abolish the monarchy, however, the monarchy is cheaper and in fact brings in more revenue than it costs whereas most of the worlds presidents not only cost more, but cause division with-in their nation instated of unity.

One of the largest money makers is the large amount of tourists who come specifically to see the Palace, the Royal guard, etc. That generates a good deal of revenue not only for the state but for the local economy(s) as well.

Mind This Queen has lived through a lot, has ruled and made hard decisions for most of her life as a Queen (over 50 years now).

As people go, she is well heeled, maintains her stoic public face at all times and rarely has made 'bad' choices.

As a person, the Queen is a 'good person'. She took the throne when she was young and has followed through without fail to uphold her duties, to present herself as the representative of the whole empire with dignity that one does not see in US presidents.

She is, however, a product of her time. She took the throne in 1952 (after her father's passing) and took the crown a year later. The world was a much different place back then, she is a product of that era.

She was 19 when World War II ended. She was present with her family with the bombings of London. She lived through World War II and got to see how her people suffered during the war.

Of course you are most likely very young and have no heart for tradition. Older folk do have a large spot in their heart for traditions, thus we who lived through a lot get a good deal of comfort from having the Queen still sitting on the Throne.
