Obese Air Passenger in Economy Seat Has Picture Taken

Whether he has a medical condition or not he should have bought TWO seats. You can bet when he arrives aat Hometown Buffet he knows better than to squeeze into a booth. But on a plane he's more than willing to cramp and spill over his fat onto other passengers. In addition to being fat he's cheap, rude, insensitive, and borders being a thief (taking up other passengers space that they PAID for).

I feel awful for this man. Not only is he incredibly wide, he's really tall. He looks very uncomfortable. With the price you pay for airline tickets, you should be allowed to have enough space to sit your ass down. They try to cram us all in like canned tuna and I know that I, even as a slender young woman, feel incredibly claustrophobic and cramped on planes.

Before you dismiss him as a lazy tub and worthless eating machine, remember that there really *are* medical conditions that can cause obesity. I would have judged him that way a few years ago, until I saw my friend's mother, a very slim woman, gain about 200 lbs from a medical disorder. She had a brain tumor that somehow disrupted her metabolism and the food processing/hunger control portions of her brain. She gained a lot of weight and hated herself for it, exercising and eating only salads, etc. They found it and decided to operate, but she killed herself before they could do the operation. She got laughed at by kids, scoffed at and avoided by adults, and it was 100% completely not her fault. Obesity is a sad medical issue. Never, ever, ever judge a person by their appearance. Didn't they teach us that in grade school? For shame.

America is in an accelerated obesity trajectory due to the ingredients in our food, such as high fructose corn syrup, estrogens, aspartame, and even antibiotics.

We are getting fat at a faster rate than ever. Four years ago one state had a 30% obesity rate among adults. Today it is 13 states. By 2020, it could be all fifty states with a 30% obesity rate or higher. Some people will be absolutely huge. We are already seeing that to a certain extent.

I'm not judging him for being fat. I'm judging him for being a rude insensitive clod. I've been stuck on a plane twice with fat people spilling in to my seat. They have no right to steal my seat that I paid for.

I mean this very seriously, someone that large shouldn't be allowed on a aeroplane at all. Imagine you have to evacuate, how is he going to make a speedy exit down the aisle. He is literally a health hazard to everyone else on the plane.

He is not tall, if you look closely you will find out that he actually sits on the armrest.

Would he even fit in the toilets?

the only medical condition that makes you *that* large is cake-in-hand syndrome. metabolism changes only make you fat if you carry on eating more than you can process, once one gains a stone or two, change diet. over 20st takes *effort* to consume enough food, while constantly battling a world made for people 5-10st smaller.

Yes, yes I would. That's not a value judgement -- simply an assessment of fact. A healthy, well muscled weight for 6'8" would be around 220 to 230. You need to live the way that feels right to you, but do so with eyes open and not hiding from facts!

Must be obese for a reason. Could be he excess fast food he has eaten cause society has expected him to keep up with the pace of the world. Today, food nutrition is a joke. Garbage in, garbage out. I blame this on society, not the individual!!!

If there is no medical reason for his obesity, he has to take responsibility for his own state of affairs.

Too often everything is blamed on outside factors, this is why the world is in the state it is in at the moment.

Actually they need to sell tickets by WEIGHT.

Luggage is controlled by weight and this is the part that has always confused me.

Two people, one 140lbs, the other 400lbs - they are both allowed, say, 20kg in luggage weight each. Should that luggage go over, the excess has to be paid for and yet if the 140lbs person has, say 30kg in luggage weight they will have to pay excess baggage and yet both the person's weight and the luggage added together would still not equal the fat person's body weight alone!

Why should that lard butt get a second seat for free? I WANT ONE TOO! I'm tired of being stuffed in like Vienna Sausage in a tin. If he gets a second seat for free I GET ONE TOO!

I doubt if he goes into a restaurant that they GIVE him seconds and thirds and fourths on all the food for FREE! By your logic that should be FREE too.

All because he's a very self-indulgent glutton. Nobody's born that fat.

I was a flight attendant for 36 years...retired now. I would not want this guy in my way, or near any other passengers, in an evacuation...and I had a few during my career. You can't believe how fast you have to move passengers out when an engine is on fire! This guy would block people.

In an earlier post, I wrote that AA took the guy in the middle seat off the plane, compensated him, and then gave the obese guy both the middle and aisle seats.

If I was a passenger and sitting at the window, you can bet I would tell the obese guy to move over and take the window and middle seat. I would then sit in the aisle seat. I would not let him block my exit if I had to get out in a hurry.

Excellent post. It's a shame most people don't show the compassion that you have shown.

When obesity is as extreme as what that man suffers, the cause is probably medical. Even if he overeats, something would have to be wrong with him to make him overeat that excessively.

I'm very sorry about your friend's mother. Those who are cruel to others should take a moment to imagine how they would feel in the same situation. Perhaps they would learn a lesson from it.

I agree. He should not get the second seat for free, but he did. I think the only reason airlines accomodate these people is to avoid bad press and to prevent a lawsuit due to discrimination.
