We have 5 cats inside (2 of which go in and out). Two we got from a rescue organizaton. Two my son brought home. The last one came to us the way yours has arrived someone dropped it off and it found us. Keep it well fed and as comfortable as possible out in the cold it will warm up to you probably take at least two weeks before it trusts you though. Ours walked in this summer and about two months ago we took it to the Vet and he verified it obviously belonged to someone was spade etc.. He tested the cat for diseases and found nothing but earmites. He recommended Advantage which is a liquid in a tube used once a month and is by prescription only and not only gets rid of fleas but earmites as well. It's not like the old days (have had cats for 39 years now)when you could buy shampoos and effective powders. The stuff that you find in supermarkets over the counter is pure crap and does litterally nothing. Advantage/Revolution/Frontline are top of the line products but are very expensive. You will want to get it on the kitty for at least a week or so before you bring it in. Our cats and the Collie are just great. Trust me I will never be without them. Good Luck! |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 660493 12/15/2009 07:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sometimes strays can have/get worms from the fleas. In the natural scheme of things (nature) felines do not cook their food. Look it up. It's true that animals may get intestinal worms but it is often obvious and easily remedied. The Diatomaceous Earth mentioned often in this thread is a natural organic dewormer among it's other uses. Avoid raw fish and raw uncured pork for reduced worm exposure. Although, I've known some to feed their cats and dogs raw uncured pork. Also, there are often small amounts of mercury and other random toxins present in seafood. Especially the farmed stuff. It's a lot easier for humans to detox than convincing a cat to detox. |

| mercury2 User ID: 841915 12/15/2009 09:02 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sounds like a nice and smart cat :-) If I were you I would wait til it has gained some weight and stabilized before you put any worm poison in its food or flea poison on it. Those things work and are necessary but could be hard on a weak guy out in the cold for sure. When you do get so you can put the flea stuff on it, the Advantage stuff that has been mentioned several times, is very good, I was hesitant to use it but didn't really have a choice, anyway it worked great and even though it probably made her feel lousy for a few days it did kill the fleas thoroughly (along with me killing them in the environmentith the borax and salt). Not cheap though. You can order it online, I got some on Amazon once. |

Not at all expensive. Cheap. www.Jefferspets.com or call 1-800-Jeffers if you are close to Alabama. You can gdet a huge amount for just a few dollars. It's also good for all bugs around the house outside. It's very drying to your hands, however. Best to use something to sprinkle other than your hand. But it is not toxic and is what is put into wheat to keep out cereal weevils. I think is is ground up volcano rock. Also used as dewormer but takes a few days. Also Adams Flea products work well. Safe for puppies and kittens. Be sure whatever you use is OK for cats as they are different from dogs in most things. One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one. Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway. Cat was sitting on the patio watching for me this morning. When I took him his food, he ran away only a little bit about 5 feet away instead of the normal 10 feet or so to hide behind the Rhododendron. When I stepped back into the house, he didnt even wait for me to close the door before he was at his food dish! Probably hoping for another Salmon Dinner for lunch today. Baby steps. . . I haven't been able to find any around here (out in the boonies), maybe should look online. Food yeast (for my consumption) doesn't seem to cut it. Back to kats: We had a huge un-neutered tom hanging around here. I live way out in the Arizona desert, surrounded by wild lands. Anyway, doggies tried to chase him off, but he beat them up. He ate whatever I left out, but would not eat until we were out of sight. I thought he was feral, because we couldn't get near him. Then, the day that our beloved gray kitty (also a stray who'd moved in about a month before) disappeared, he suddenly became real friendly. Hmmm. He must have noticed how cushy the other pets had it here ("doggie heaven"), so decided to move in for the winter. He spends all day sleeping on my bed, then heads out at night to do whatever kats do. The dogs TRY to intimidate him, but he ignores them. He's slicked up really well; fed on dry Friskies, canned mackeral or whatever meat I've got. It's as if he's always been part of the family. But I still miss Gray kitty. She played with puppy, sometimes chasing her, even getting up in trees to ambush. The just loved each other, slept with their little arms around the other, so cute. "Puppy", Petey - although she's a "she" - is now pretty big, tries to entice tomcat to play, but he's just not interested. It's pathetic to watch; she tries EVERYTHING, even turning about and flopping her tail at him. No dice. Yeah, I love pets/animals. Grew up on a cattle ranch. Have trained horses (making them allies, so that they want to do what you want to do. One gelding I'd raised from a yearling was so enthusiastic that when my brother, an outfitter, took him elk-hunting, the horse learned to bugle for elk. Some horses are pretty special and way smart, others are just horses...). The above-mentioned older brother is an absolute genius with horses. Even the real brats - and I've had some - always behave perfectly for him. He's real quiet, doesn't say much. I don't have that ability; the critter decides quite early on that I'm a total pushover. Heck, the other day I tried to chase a roadrunner out of the yard 'cuz they eat my quail. Roadrunners are usually pretty skittish, but this one practically ignored me. Talk about being ineffectual. My husband, Eagle Flys, really enjoyed this, because he, also, ignores and laughs at my hissy-fits. Sigh.
