If there's one thing I HATE, it's the nickname 'Aspie'. As a kid with Aspergers, I don't mind being diagnosed with a disease, but when there's a nickname like that going round, I just think it's making us out to be completely different from 'normal' people, and we're not a whole new race, we just need a little extra care.

Agreed. I think the term is offensive and diminishes Asperger's completely.

People don't make little nicknames up for those suffering from cancer, MS, etc. So why this one? If people want it taken seriously, then perhaps they should treat it as such.

I think asbergers was a term before assburgers and it was named after the guy that discovered (or maybe made up, idk) the condition.

An aspie family member couldn't go to his grandma's funeral because 'he was too busy preparing for the F1 racing season'. Fcuking cars and engines particularly were FAR more important to him than a loving grandma who'd brought him up because his aspie mother couldn't cope with him.

Well just because people have Aspergers, doesn't mean they have to be nicknamed like that. They can just be called people, even if they have any kind of conditions.

Aspergers is real but its overdiegnosed .people who are shy, socially awkward or have add are being diagnosed as that.

when they dont heve the emotional trouble or trouble reading non verbal cues, or having sympathy

Thanks OP. I'll expect you at my home at 3AM to tell my five year old she has nothing wrong, when she wakes up in the middle of the night screaming because she has lost touch of where arms and legs are....(sensory processing disorder that is part of Asperger's). You can tell her that when she wakes up in the morning and is not processing visually and the world looks like broken glass has been strewn everywhere with light reflecting from every shard.

Also, OP, have a great time explaining that to my child....because like most children with Asperger's, her IQ is probably triple that of yours. Hope you can outsmart her to help her see that nothing is wrong with her.

Only thing you didn't mention is whether the need to prepare overode his ability to care about his grandma or if he was so freaked out thinking about being in a social situation, he started focusing on preparing for the race to shut out the rest of the ENTIRE world.

It's a bunch of signs and symptoms somebody put together. Does it work to help some children, teens and adults or not? I think it goes down to this.

And since you look "normal", shouting, don't shoot, I'm an aspie doesn't work, you need to stand up to the challenges of the real world.

But some things like aspies reporting very frequent unusual reactions to medications that affect the brain, may somehow point to it being true that their brains are wired differently. Same with motor clumsiness and sensory problems.

The difference with schizoids? Asperger people want to make friends and like other people's company, they seek it. They don't withdraw out of lack of interest in other people.

Great feeling,isn't it? For my mom and closest friends it's pretty obvious. For strangers it's not. They don't beleive me, but some end up abusing me quite a lot. College teachers have proven to be the worst.

Anyone who has this can feel better by thinking about it like this:

Find whatever it is you "geek on," take it and run with that. Use the "disease" to your advantage. There is always a way to do that. If you have a child with it, use his or her special talent or obsession as a platform for their education and development. For example, a boy loves, eats, thinks, and breathes Star Trek, knows everything about it, but seems to have a block against doing math problems, can be encouraged to work out math problems using Star Trek: "The USS Enteprise is on a mission to Epsilon Omega to rendezvous with the starship Unifikatum. If the Enterprise travels 3.4 parsecs per hour at Warp Factor 2, and the Unifikatum is 53 parsecs away, how many hours will it take the ship to complete the journey?"

Of course, you could be like the OP might, and try to block all thoughts and references to Star Trek from the kid's life, since Asperger's is all bullshit and doesn't exist. Not forgetting to mention that OP might HATE Star Trek.
