Carl Sagan used to be held up as such an astronomy genius and he would always claim the odds of other planets with life was one in billions, and billions, he always tried to say there was little chance of other planets with advanced life.

Einstein, also made up the erroneous theory of relativity to try and explain why space travel was impossible.
