This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both.
The chimes were ringing the three quarters past eleven at that moment.

``Forgive me if I am not justified in what I ask,'' said Scrooge, looking intently at the Spirit's robe, ``but I see something strange, and not belonging to yourself, protruding from your skirts. Is it a foot or a claw!''

``It might be a claw, for the flesh there is upon it,'' was the Spirit's sorrowful reply. ``Look here.''

From the foldings of its robe, it brought two children; wretched, abject, frightful, hideous, miserable. They knelt down at its feet, and clung upon the outside of its garment.

``Oh, Man! look here. Look, look, down here!'' exclaimed the Ghost.

They were a boy and girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish; but prostrate, too, in their humility. Where graceful youth should have filled their features out, and touched them with its freshest tints, a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds. Where angels might have sat enthroned, devils lurked, and glared out menacing. No change, no degradation, no perversion of humanity, in any grade, through all the mysteries of wonderful creation, has monsters half so horrible and dread.

Scrooge started back, appalled. Having them shown to him in this way, he tried to say they were fine children, but the words choked themselves, rather than be parties to a lie of such enormous magnitude.

``Spirit! are they yours?'' Scrooge could say no more.

``They are Man's,'' said the Spirit, looking down upon them. ``And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it!'' cried the Spirit, stretching out its hand towards the city. ``Slander those who tell it ye! Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse! And bide the end!''

``Have they no refuge or resource?'' cried Scrooge.

``Are there no prisons?'' said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. ``Are there no workhouses?''

The bell struck twelve.

Scrooge looked about him for the Ghost, and saw it not. As the last stroke ceased to vibrate, he remembered the prediction of old Jacob Marley, and lifting up his eyes, beheld a solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him.

The boy is filled with false doctrine. He believes He is divine because his genes express some of the gifts of Adam through flesh. But, he has merely become a tool, because he refuses to believe in His Creator, therefore the gifts avail him nothing. He walks in darkness, He teaches simpletons his theories, to also lead them into darkness. He therefore, becomes more evil, every passing day. The girl is a simpleton for she is hungry for love....she does not know that she cannot find the love of God in flesh, and the Love That Surpasses Flesh, The Love Of God, is truly what she seeks.

You need to read the book or watch the movies completely to understand. The ghost was using Scrooge's own words against him when Scrooge asked why they had no home or kinfolk. Scrooge believed that people who were homeless belonged in prison.

Re: This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both.
What Dickens was trying to do here is call for social justice. It is most clear in the above passage when the Ghost of Christmas Present warns Scrooge to beware of Ignorance and Want forces which if left unchecked can spell doom not only for the poor but for the whole of society. Dickens stresses the humanity common to all people, and demands that those who have act accordingly towards those who have not.

The story is meant to leave its reader with the understanding that Scrooge and by extension we ourselves ought to be more concerned with the quality of our lives here and now. The narrative often touches on these questions: What constitutes a real life? What does it mean to be human? Its answer to be human is to love and to love as Dickens knew the Scriptures taught not with mere words but in concrete actions As Marleys Ghost tells Scrooge our spirits must walk abroad among our fellow human beings doing what acts of love we can.

Read it indeed! It is a masterpiece of literature, a lesson in morality, overflowing with truth and insight. This is the very reason why it has survived the test of time. It is as relevant now as it was in 1843 London.

Re: This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both.
Simple and great way to say it. Good writing.

The boy, ignorance (people who don't understand reality, and don't know what to do with it or themselves) clings to the Spirit because he doesn't feel at home in the world, the girl, want (people who don't have what they need) clings because it needs material nourishment, but love too, and the many things healthy people require. The Spirit tells Scrooge that the world needs the ignorant to be made understanding, and those who don't have to start receiving. It's horrible to live in a world without those two kindnesses, and it's a world we see often.

I also find it interesting that Ignorance and Want are hidden behind the skirt of The Spirit of Christmas present.
