Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
I have antenna connections on the back of my receiver but no antenna. The connections are clips that you would stick a wire into and it would clamp down on it.

Can I rig something up with speaker wire to those connections to get some reception today?

Hope someone can help.

Re: Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
yes you can.....

get an old fan and make a long spiral on it with the wire......

it will work like a sattelite dish antenna....

the design that is.....

connect opposite ends of wire to the t.v. or radio terminals.....

whatever it is you are using.....
Beyond one's own mind there is no dazzling light to come shining in from outside to wake one up. If one recognizes one's own intrinsic State as pure from the beginning and only temporarily obscured by impurities, and if one maintains the presence of this recognition without becoming distracted, then all the impurities dissolve. This is the essence of the Path-namkhai norbu.

Why is there a legend about the descent of Christ into hell? The Teacher addressed the lower strata of the astral world, saying: Why, by cherishing earthly thoughts, bind oneself eternally to Earth? And many revolted in spirit and rose higher.

Or, attach the center conductor of your cable TV coax to one of the connections on the receiver.

Re: Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
you can even tune your antenna to get a specific frequency (your favorite radio channel for example) by cutting the wires to an exact length. I'm sure this info can be googled.

You guys are great to answer right away, thanks.

Can I just strip the end of the speaker wire and stick one of the wires in each of the two FM connector points, and then hang the long speaker wire up over the curtain rod?

Re: Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
i need to make a new one for my shortwave radio. lost the old 100 foot flying vee in a windstorm. we climbed up 50 feet to put that sucker up and now the tree in the middle of the vee has crashed. anyone know an easy way to rig for 5 to 140 megahertz? my sightline one for police band is okay. i forget the megahertz, i am a real rookie when it comes to SW but i unfortunatly spent a fair whack of money and have quite the unit.

Don't have cable TV and am not sure how that would work in these clips but thanks for the suggestion! hf

Shortwave sounds fun. You must have gotten great reception with the old antenna, sorry it got wrecked.

I have ever wanted to try a scanner for when I ride the train, to overhear the crew and know what's going on. A lot of people do that, I think I would like that.

You have to split the free end so you have "rabbit ears" in effect. You may have to rotate the rabbit ears to maximize the signal you want. If the station is close or very strong then then what you propose is sufficient.

Those seem like good instructions, very simple. I think I am going to stick a piece of speaker wire in the connections and see what happens and not get any more elaborate about it for now.

No, you have to seperate the two halves to make a dipole. If you leave the two wires together, it just acts like a transmission line, and won't absorb RF energy.

It should look like this:

Re: Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
I took a piece of speaker wire and put the stripped wires in the connection clips. I split the other end like Walt said and I taped one end to a metal upright floor lamp and the other end to the metal curtain rod.

I now have some kind of reception where i had none before and I am listening to Leonard Cohen sing Hallelujah and we will see what else we can come up with - It worked! Thanks!

Re: Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
I did something similar to this. I am living in a basement apartment with a drop tile ceiling and i ran some speaker wire from the 30Ohm antennae terminals on myyoda stereo receiver, up the wall and into the ceiling space. I taped one end of it to the air duct and one to the cross member holding up the tiles and now i get every local radio station crystal clear where i used to get none.

Re: Can I make an FM antenna from speaker wire?
Just Google antenna theory. ,any types of them depending on what you are working with. Since you are not transmitting a simple wire ran and split will work. I have talked to ppl in south america from NC on a directional die pole and 400 watts of trz power. I have also talked 700 miles with a square antenna cut to freq and using 24 wits HF
