In fact, there is also information to suggest that it was a term used to slander those who opposed national socialism in Germany (the exact opposite). That is why I started looking into older uses of the word (or similar uses). |

Accordingly to this link: [link to www.somethingjewish.co.uk] the word 'ashkenaz' means German in Yiddish, though the same word is used in the Book of Genesis as someone's name. So the writer of Genesis named one of the people the equivalent of naming them "German"? I don't think so... |

Nearly everyone here in Germany thinks NAZI stands for National Socialist, they screwed history well. NASO is for NAtional SOcialist (a follower of the "nationale deutsche arbeiterpartei" NSDAP) So if my assumption is right, a NAZI has to be a JEW of ZIONIST belief. Greetings from Berlin, Germany. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 751162If he was, then he shouldn't have been reading copies of Ostara Magazine now should he have? He also shouldn't have allowed some catholic bishops to be persecuted. Aren't Jesuits supposed to attend mass, because it is an established FACT that Hitler stopped attending mass for some time before his death? |

Greetings from Berlin, Germany. If this were true (and it is an intriguing thought), then one could easily state that a National Zionist would push for a restoration of a Jewish Nation-State, such as what was pushed for in the Balfour Declaration of 1917 (a full 20 years prior to the Holocaust) in a formal statement by the British government in a written letter to (tada) Walter Rothschild (a leader of the British Jewish Community) as is documented in historical record (you can find it at the British Library). Interestingly, the Rothschilds have quite the impressive bit of ties with the German Jewish community. |

(Dictionary Tooltip addon for Firefox) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 851182Result: [German, short for Nationalsozialistische deutsche Arbeiter-Partei, National Socialist German Workers' Party.] The information you presented is not definitive and frankly it is no longer the "accepted" origin of the term. The "accepted" origin is that it is short for the word "National" (leaving the socialist part out). Though even this is not definitive. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 851182 United Kingdom 12/28/2009 06:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nazi 1930, from Ger. Nazi, abbreviation of Ger. pronunciation of Nationalsozialist (based on earlier Ger. sozi, popular abbreviaton of "socialist"), from Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei "National Socialist German Workers' Party," led by Hitler from 1920. The 24th edition of Etymologisches Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache (2002) says the word Nazi was favored in southern Germany (supposedly from c.1924) among opponents of National Socialism because the nickname Nazi (from the masc. proper name Ignatz, Ger. form of Ignatius) was used colloquially to mean "a foolish person, clumsy or awkward person." Ignatz was a popular name in Catholic Austria, and according to one source in WWI Nazi was a generic name in the German Empire for the soldiers of Austria-Hungary. An older use of Nazi for national-sozial is attested in Ger. from 1903, but EWdS does not think it contributed to the word as applied to Hitler and his followers. The NSDAP for a time attempted to adopt the Nazi designation as what the Germans call a "despite-word," but they gave this up, and the NSDAP is said to have generally avoided the term. Before 1930, party members had been called in Eng. National Socialists, which dates from 1923. The use of Nazi Germany, Nazi regime, etc., was popularized by German exiles abroad. From them, it spread into other languages, and eventually brought back to Germany, after the war. In the USSR, the terms national socialist and Nazi were said to have been forbidden after 1932, presumably to avoid any taint to the good word socialist. Soviet literature refers to fascists. Anonymous Coward User ID: 851189 United States 12/28/2009 06:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It was a term used by English speakers to abbreviate Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. From the first 2 syllables of the German pronunciation of Nationalsozialistische: Na-tsee-oh-nael = Na + tsee = Nazi. Nothing more complex than that, just as using the term "commie" for communist or "bolshi" for bolshevik. |

You'd think if someone really cared about that portion of history not being repeated they would encourage free thought, historical research, and discussion on all aspects of that point in history in order to better educate the people of this planet about war, past ideologies, and important historical events. |
