Re: IT HURTS ME TOO (Grateful Dead 1972)
I was at a show in Hartford once when Weir came out before the show. He said "Jerry's real sick he can't breath on a respirator we can't do the "..just then a glass bottle broke right in Weir's face. Everyone ran off the stage as a huge riot started. Shit was flying over my head. About six Hells Angels came onstage with bandanas covering faces..

Re: IT HURTS ME TOO (Grateful Dead 1972)
I saw them about 12 times during the 1975-1979 period. The concerts were lots of fun......thousands of people in a small area....all very happy. The type of music they played just made you feel good. One time I was in the 3rd row. The speaker system behind the stage was about 100 feet wide and very tall.....many speakers linked together.....towering up over 100 feet above the stage.

What I found amazing was that no two shows were alike. One time I saw 3 shows on 3 consec. days at the same theatre in Chicago. Each show was completely different. And they never did the same song quite the same either.

They liked to keep it interesting. They did a lot of improvisation up there......making things up on the spot.....which is not too easy for a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, piano, bass, and two drummers. With six people making stuff up as they go along (like jazz), you have to know each other quite well to pull it off.....which they did.

You have to really have seen them live to fully appreciate this.....but there are a few videos out there that capture some of it. The concert recorded at Duke University (April 1978) is fairly good quality.....perhaps some students were involved in recording it. You can access it by going to youtube.com and typing in Grateful Dead@Duke University.

Elmore James is a great guy....but I think that he probably performed some songs other people wrote as well....all with permission, of course. :)

139 shows upon my back to have you call me child...

RIP Pigpen you were the quintessential blues man!
RIP Jerry you defined almost everything we know about stereo guitar sound and you sure did sound sweet. Meet you at Terrapin Station one of these days.
RIP Keith, Brent and Vince you all had very tough shoes to fill twinkleing those keys for us!

Folowing up on my backstage encounter at Watkin'
Glenn... Phil Lesh was really a great guy very
friendly. Jerry was there for a while with us
then went into a seperate trailer with his guitar
I believe he was playing the Fender with an alligator
sticker on. I loved the tone of that guitar. I
think he used that 72-74? Check out the watkins
Glenn show. It was a real trip. Great thread... a
keeper for New years eve.

The best ones are probably the ones I can't remember lol but... Yep I saw them 139 times, did a lot of taping, had Jerry's number and talked to him once, did some work with Buddy Cage but I digress...I think one of my favorites would have been...

Lewiston Maine, Saturday 9-6-80

What a fantastic way to end a summer and end a tour! Hitchhiked up there with a friend of mine from Massachusetts and met some great people on the way, still not quite sure how I got home but made it. Roy Buchanan and Levon Helm and the Cate Brothers were the openers and Roy just ripped, I still listen to that tape regularly and love the way he ripped Peter Gunn. Second set of that show was just amazing with;
Shakedown Street
Lost Sailor->
Saint Of Circumstance
Althea
Playing In The Band->
Uncle John's Band->
Jam->
Drums->
Not Fade Away->
The Wheel->
Uncle John's Band->
Playing In The Band->
Sugar Magnolia

One More Saturday Night->
Brokedown Palace (It was perfect for ending the tour with and you could just feel the passion of everyone)

I would have loved to have seen the Wall of Sound it was one experience in all of my shows that I never got to see. they recycled a lot of it though and I believe they used a pretty large chunk of it at the Lewiston show because the speaker system was just massive.

Yeah that wall was wild. It had a very clean pure sound
live. Just too much work to set up. Nice while it lasted
though.
