Quake, tsunami destroyed 200 homes in Solomon Islands, official says

HONIARA, Solomon Islands - A disaster management official said today that an earthquake and a tsunami destroyed 200 homes on one of the Solomon Islands, leaving about one-third of the island's population homeless.

Disaster management office director Loti Yates says visual assessments from the air show extensive damage after a 7.2-magnitude temblor struck Monday.

No injuries have been reported after the biggest in a series of quakes churned a tsunami wave that was up to 10 feet high as it plowed into a remote region in the nation's west.

Yates said more than 1,000 people have been affected by the destruction.

Only 3,600 people live on Rendova, one of the Solomon Islands about 190 miles from the capital, Honiara.

Very sad. Spent some time there, the people don't have 'homes' like you and I in the first place. I hope they are getting help.

I agree, West Coast will shake, then central U.S. including the New Madrid.

The World Shake map a day or two later showed the earth ringing like a bell like it did in 2004

I have a question before a quake hits can you hear things that others may not?

What do you mean? You can sometimes hear a roar as it's heading towards you.

I occasionally get a ringing in my ears. It doesn't happen often, but a couple of times last night included it appeared to be followed by an earthquake. However, I had this ringing not long ago and even started a thread because IF a large earthquake did happen I would have 'proof' that there may have been something to it. That time of course, no earthquake occured.

I heard a rumbling noise a few minutes ago and asked my husband, who was outside if he heard it and he said no. This is not the first time this has happened. It happened back in Nov. and Dec. also, I live in Alabama.

The people of the Solomon Island region must totally unnerved w/2 big quakes and the big aftershocks that have been ongoing. Prayers for them. :(
