Actually it's not just a guess.

I have electrical and electronics background, and yes a steel shipping container will act like a Faraday Cage and block all the EMP pulses.

hmm i was under the assumpt such a thing could only be plausible if were made of copper?

Metal is metal. The container actually acts as a conductor to direct the energy around the vehicle much like it would if lightning struck it. It acts as a shield. Even if not grounded it might be ok but for good measure put in some grounds for the container.
