Best Emergency Rations? Buying MRE's online
What are some good sources for MRE's and other non-perishable foods that one could use after a disaster? I have a stash of rice and beans, but I don't want to be bored to tears.

I'm looking for a cheap place to buy this food online. Thanks.

buy some jugs of protein powder. mix w/water

i keep protein bars / high energy bars in my gear

if you google homemade sports bars, etc. you will find lots of recipes out there

stay away from mre's, way too much money and they are shit

get on a mormon web site and poke around, they are the experts on this

LOL, good one, but I don't need 500 mini bottles of tabasco sitting around tempting me. I could see trading a silver dollar for one though.

Interesting, I'll search right now. These bars do not go bad? Also, why the hell do Mormons know so much about emergency rations? That's not the way I've ever pictured them.

Re: Best Emergency Rations? Buying MRE's online
Any canned food available from any supermarket. If you're willing to eat it, buy some. Remember you get much less fussy if you haven't eaten for two days.

Any ready to eat meal which you can heat by putting foil pouches in hot water. You can make a solar oven with some plastic storage boxes and some foil.

Tins of coffee if you like it. Or else tea. Tubes of condensed milk. Boxes of UHT milk. Boxes of flavored UHT milk.

Packets of beef jerky. Packets of peanuts or other nuts. Bags of raisins or other dried fruit. Bags of oats or other grain you like to eat. Rolled oats are good option.

Iodized salt. Pepper. Bottles of chili sauce and other sauces. It's easier to eat crappy canned food if you can put something else on it.

Bottled water. Bottles of plain bleach. Plain bleach can be used to purify water you collect from puddles or creeks, turning it into yummy chlorinated drinking water!!

Re: Best Emergency Rations? Buying MRE's online
I found this recipe. My question is, wouldn't these bars go bad? If so how quickly? Thanks for the help.

Power Bars - 6 servings
1/2 banana, mashed*
1 tbsp natural no sugar added PB*
1/3 cup oatmeal
3 packets sweetener
1/4 tsp baking powder (not soda)
1/2 scoop protien powder - I usually use between 1/2 cu and a cu.
add pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, Mix together and bake 300 degrees for 10 minutes. makes 6.

Re: Best Emergency Rations? Buying MRE's online
Mormons had a hellish first couple of years when they first moved to Utah. I'll tell you, they ate crickets!
So never again, they store multi-years of food.

My favorite is Mountain home Granola with milk and blueberries. Very pricey but good for me on 01/01/10 when nothing close by was open. The freezing cold water used to rehydrade it made it better IMHO. I'm saving the pouch to see if I can make it myself from the ingredient list.

your BIGGEST bang for your buck is.....grain. you also need storage and a grain mill. if you do you could go for30 years for a couple of grand. pasta, pasta, bread, pasta and more pasta. then get some sauces for it, some will last for 10 years and grow some onions or chives. kill a deer every so often and you have some pretty good meals. Montreal steak spice is one of my favorites for deer. it goes a long way and should last as long as the grain. note: the flour i make has no preservatives and is only good for a day or two. a downside to fresh nutrient rich foods!

they are by far, the leading authorities on long term food storage. but they live it everyday, they don't buy a bunch of food and then go to McDonalds

Survivors need calories, not fiber. Grain is only what the poor people eat these days because it's cheap, and it's cheap because there is a huge supply. You need a lot of slaves to maintain a decent grain supply. For starters, a 4 footed animal and a plow. Irrigation, fertilizer, pest control, security to keep other people from stealing it, harvest people, people to separate the grain from the chaff, and grain grinders. Then you have to cook the stuff before eating it. That is if nuclear winter doesn't happen.

Think of life on an old boat crossing the Atlantic. They had booze, limes, salted pork, and other stuff. Think like them, because you will be like them. Get some salt, for preserving meat. Get yourself some bows and arrows and knives. Plant some citrus trees. Get some farm animals started.

It's crazy but ALL but one survival stuff I bought was from costco. The best was the AirX windturbine, free shipping.

The one year supply was 799 in November and was sold out in three weeks! Some of the veggie and fruit combos are slightly less else where, but for free shipping most are a good deal.

I agree MRE's are pricey but I have them as part of the variety in my emergency supplies. Go to www.theepicenter.com . I am not affiliated with them in any way but have bought MRE's, freeze dried, other emergency supplies ect from them over the past 2 years. They are honest and ship the same day. very reliable. Family business you can call and ask questions. Mark

Re: Best Emergency Rations? Buying MRE's online
Ever read the ingredients in MRE's? It read like something out of dow chemicals dumpster. regular canned food lasts as long as mre's. learn to can food yourself. Ans I know A lot of mormons and maybe and I mean maybe 7% of them store at least 6 months of food. Most mormons are just as apathetic as the rest of the retarded public. buy a lot of canned food you like and rotate the stock. Spices will last a long time so get a lot of them. Freeeze dried food is about the same price as an mre and lasts 10 times lomger. Heres 1 place you can try www.beprepared.com
