I'm a former Long Islander, and you're right, the op is full of it and was never there.

I remember when this happened. It was NEVER known as the L.I. Sound crash...what a load.

It crashed off Center Moriches, Great South Bay.

Having said that, I still believe the plane was hit by a missile that went up and hit it. There were plenty of people who were on boats in the bay that were interviewed on TV right after it and said the same thing.

We were testing a Littoral based guidance system using overlapping subsystems in tandem on a Long Range S2A, across what was to've been clear airspace at that time, the remote drone was not destroyed but the missile self acquired and rose abruptly to strike the aircraft in question.

It wasn't to be there then, the airspace was pre-reserved for that window and it should have been detained for the remainder of the window.

The missile entered the right wing root area and traversed the aircrafts passenger compartment completely detonating immediately outside over and aft the Left wing.

Center Tank theory doesn't jive with me. Boeing wasn't stupid enoungh to put significant current carrying wires in fuel tanks. The only wires in the tanks are VERY low current, and provide fuel quantity indication based on a change in mean capacitance measured by probes sensing a change in overall fuel amount (fuel acting as 'dialectric'). Trust me i've wired these suckers up.

Did hear that an Ageis class ship was in the area.. USS Normandy?

Besides being first on the Fire Island beach, I also found two lifejackets with TWA marking and French writing on them.They were on the bay beach inside of Moriches Bay. This was on Christmas Day of 1996. They had black burn marks on them. I called 911 and turned them in to police after taking close up photos. I didn't want the damn things around the house and the FBI was actively threatning anyone who found wreckage and didn't turn it in.

yes - decades of flying these things and then one happens to blow.

I think the navy was dicking around with civilian aircraft and using them as wargame targets, when some moron actually fired a live round at the plane.

It makes me sick thinking of how corrupt the FBI, NTSB, etc are. There is a special place in hell..

On the evening of July 17, 1996, TWA 800 had been directed onto, and was traveling in, the "Betty Route," the route assigned to commercial planes when parts of Long Island Sound, designated W-105 and W-106, are either in use by the military or reserved for military use. In addition to the formal record provided by the air controller's verbal direction, the FAA log books also confirm that the military had that night reserved, though not necessarily used, W-106 (sometimes pronounced Whiskey-106, sometimes Warning-106).

We do not know what level or intensity of military exercises was underway that night. We do know military craft were in the air and sea at the moment TWA 800 had reached 13,700 feet and began to fall. Directly overhead was a Navy P3 Orion with its transponder turned off: it was 6,300 feet above the passenger plane and had intersected its longitude and latitude within seconds of the moment the catastrophe began. In the airspace beneath TWA 800 a Black Hawk helicopter and an HC-130 plane were flying at an altitude of 3,000 feet: they were five miles north of the commercial liner. A Coast Guard cutter rescue ship, the Adak, was somewhere on the sea below, its precise location in relation to the falling plane unspecified in the official record but given in news reports as nine to twelve miles south. One hundred and eighty-five miles to the southwest was an Aegis cruiser, the USS Normandy: that mileage places it off Maryland's Eastern Shore.

I remember very clearly during initial reports that a missile type object was reported.

i've heard a lot about this. i think there is some truth to it being a coverup. but who was on the plane that it was so important to destroy it along with 200-300 other people? who, or what, was on that plane?

yep I remember hearing similiar that it was a surface to air missle. Later they tried to say it was a faulty wignut or bolt or something in the tail.

I was always convinced that the Egyptair plane that the pilot allegedly inexplicably crashed into the ocean a few years later was also a terrorist cover up.

There was no evidence the pilot was suicidal but some of the manuevers that he did with the plane were similar to things pilots are trained to do in the case of an immediate terrorist/hijacking threat - one of which is to put the plane into a plunge so that the terrorist or hijackers lose their balance and can then be taken care of. The US refused to release any of the info on the flight recorders to Egyptian authorities either.

Your confused with the crash that happened a little after 911 in 2001. The wreckage of TWA 800 was recovered 10 miles off of Moriches Inlet in the Atlantic Ocean.
