Fucking pipes are frozen.... | |
Dr Doom User ID: 833993 United States 01/07/2010 02:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You silly Texans just throw these houses up without any consideration to the weather.... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 821633As hot as it gets down here, why aren't they all brick and adobe houses? As often as you get freezing weather, why aren't pipes buried or insulated better? I swear I never saw frozen water pipes in Alaska. I've seen a lot of ruptured pipes from the ground heaving, but that is it. I live in a 40+ years old brick house... but it is pier and beam, so it has an unheated crawlspace... I covered the crawlspace vents and opened the cabinets during the night... that works for temps in the mid-20s... but tonight it is supposed to get down into the lower teens !! ~ Last Edited by Atossa on 01/07/2010 02:24 PM __________ ____ |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 582017 United States 01/07/2010 02:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When temps get down to freezing, for a day or so,is not so much the problem as when it gets below 0 for many days in a row and then with wind chills to -10-15.Have had to thaw certain pipes now for 4 days or so. A bottle of gaterade on the toilet float works to keep water running enough. Wind chills that can get to any under insulated pipes is your enemy.A hair drying works best but anything you use when it is -10 or colder outside is a bitch to deal with. I love winter time but I hate winter time. With up coming temps tonite and tomorrow of low single digit with wind gust 20mph+ I am crossing my fingers because you can only do so much. I had bottles of water, along a not so good insulated outside wall (inside the building) freeze the other night. Breaking out the Jack to help keep warm tonite. |

Texas is a materialistic, backasswards, fucking flat, thorny, and stinky ass wasteland. Don't know how to build a quality home here either. |

Quoting: Dr DoomDo you have to allow all the faucets in the house to drip ? What if it is below freezing for days... do you allow them to drip for days ? How about faucets in the bathtub and shower ? What about the commode ? ~ Coming from someone who knows what they are talking about because i live in a very cold climate..you dont let your faucets DRIP..you let them RUN just enough so it doesnt bother you..a drip will do nothing to keep the water from freezing up in cold weather..only running water will do that..just turn your faucet on enough to let the water run continuously plus some.. |

Of course I found out after my morning constitution. Now I have an evil mess in the toilet. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 821633Off to go get a bucket of lake water and to the store for some drinking water... Discuss. Turn off your water, and thaw out the pipes. If you leave the water on, you may bust your water pipes. This is especially true for PVC. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 808006 United States 01/07/2010 02:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok, if you live in a town where they supply the water it also makes a difference in how deep your water lines are buried in the ground where they come into the house. In many southern states they do not bury their water lines very deep, in that case the water could be frozen underground in the lines that feed your house as well as inside your house. If they are frozen underground from the city or town supplied water then your screwed and only the water company or city can unthaw them. The colder it gets the deeper the frost settles into the ground, if the frost freezes the ground where the pipes are then it makes the pipes freeze also. A long cold spell can cause the frost to really sink into the ground many feet. |
