I have over 50 cans of tuna in my stockpile, but this isn't all that much more expensive and tastes a hell of a lot better than a can of tuna. Also, I am not in survival mode (yet), I am in weathering the storm mode. :) |

Ya can probably buy 30 cans of campbells instead. I love to make homemade veg beef soup but my god it cost too much :( Just passing thru. OG id 126286 NasTraDooMis |

You can't pronounce most of those ingredients and you shouldn't be eating them. |
NasTraDooMis User ID: 808344 United States 01/09/2010 12:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | northern beans? is that navy beans? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 860523Normally they are sold as "Great Northern Beans" at the your market. Not hard to find. I think any bean will work in this recipe though. Experiment and enjoy! I just loves me some GNB's :) I prefer them over pinto's . I can make a mean pot O beans ! Throw in a hamhock or some neckbones, green onions, cook em up then add a bit of paprika and chili powder n sea salt. And as a side some jiffy cornbread. Just passing thru. I have a large collection of spices and seasonings because food without spices and seasoning is um... crap. Most spices and seasonings do not expire very quickly either. They last years. Also, the spices in the recipe are not "exotic", if I can find them at Kroger - they are mainstream. Enjoy the recipe if you cook it, and if you like it, I'm glad you did. |

Buy spices that you use in bulk. They don't cost much in the long run. And buy spices for your preps. They will really help with menu fatigue. Can you say tabasco! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 856576 United States 01/09/2010 12:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not as tasty as the Moroccan soup, but a staple in my house even when we don't need to save money: 3 bags split peas: $3 Bag org. carrots: $2 3 onions: $2.50 Bag organic celery: $3.00 tomatoes (optional):$3.00 whole grain bread: $3.00 Total: about 16.50 (or on a tight budget, 10.50). Will feed a family of four dinner three or four nights. Boring after a couple of days, but nutritious, and nobody goes to bed hungry. I have recommended organic celery and carrots because these are two veggies that really should be bought organic when possible, and the price is not increased much if you buy organic. Tomatoes, peas, and onions are ok non-organic. Boil split peas for 45 minutes, adding veggies about 15 minutes before taking off heat. Add salt, pepper, and if you have it, rosemary and garlic. If you have it, add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil but this is not necessary. This soup is even better if run through a blender but blending is not necessary. Please note that on a tight budget, tomatoes are optional. Bread is also optional but adds greatly to enjoyment. |
