These programs were diet MK Ultra.

What is your name?
Where are you from?
Why are you asking?
 Quoting: Vedic Medic

"I don't know" to the first two questions. The third question is for you to answer not me.

One time in the early evening, a group of other kids came across the state line and asked me who I was. I had never seen them before. I told them the name my parents gave me and they said that wasn't my name and kept asking me who I was. They kept saying, "what is your real name?". This went on until I made up a name and they were satisfied enough to leave. I had an odd feeling that I knew these kids from someplace else. It was a weird experience.

Science Fiction was what I naturally read. One day I liked a story I had read so much, I wanted to read it again. After looking through my small library of books I had read, I couldn't find the story. I had to conclude I must have dreamt it. This going to other worlds while in dream continues to present time, often I get tired and sit down to nap, then go to "God knows where", for an hour or two. And I dream the whole of the time, not just an accelerated period of time the scientists say we dream at. Every once in a while I return to the same places, and get updates on what happened there in my absence.

.....I spent hours in the library reading stuff you couldn't check out. I think I read every philosophy and sociology book they had in the library.

I can't imagine how smart I might have been if I had had the information that we have access to now as a child. I might have lost my mind, though.

It just amazes me that no one is curious anymore. I hunger for information, not news, information, you know, and now you can get so many questions answered without doing any research. My parents wouldn't let me use an Encyclopedia at all, they made me go to the library, or they'd say IT'S ALL IN THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, which is funny, because in a way, it is.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 607669

bump agreed. I am insatiable when it comes to learning. I can't comprehend how some people aren't curious about things.

I was pulled out of class for testing often and was in the "Gifted Program" but I did not live in the 70s or in California.. They tested my IQ when I was 5 to be 166 and I was not allowed to be in regular math or science classes in elementary through 6th grade. They tested me in kindergarten but I have no memory of these tests, yet many memories of my school days.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 802888

I only remember one part of the first test I remember at about 4, the doctor asked me to draw a diamond. I screwed it up, erased it, turned the paper about 14 degrees and drew a square. I guess that's when they knew I was a GENIus!

Here are some art works that you may have been made familiar with from an early age:

Again significant because of the exposure to them at a very early age.

They have been tracking children since they started standardized testing. Who the fuck cares anymore? There has always been a permanent record, believe you me. I am glad to see someone getting it out there, as I always suspected that most of the posters on this and other forums I frequent are predominantly gifted speed-readers and only children, too. It takes a speed reader to look at four hundred threads and know which two to click on, ignore the bs, find the good stuff. Story of my life.

I am kinda creeped out by all of this. I posted on the first page earlier from home, but I'm now at work. I was the first to state that I don't remember hardly anything from the GATE classes.

I've read the thread and some of what people remember is triggering memories for me.

Why did my mind hide these memories from me?

Why did we all seem to meet up here, when I NEVER meet anyone in real life who has even heard of the GATE program?

By the way, all of my siblings were in GATE as well. Nothing exceptional about my parents. My mother is really good at art and my father is really good with math. Neither really did much with their lives.

Do you guys find yourself easily bored with what "normal" people find interesting? I don't watch much tv, unless it's documentary style programs (History Channel, National Geographic, etc). My wife hates that. She says that I like "boring tv." I find it very interesting and am constantly looking for new things to learn about online.

Here's another question. When you stumble across something that really interests you, do you obsessively research it and try to know EVERYTHING about the subject? I do. I'll spend days researching info on something that has caught my attention...again...drives my wife nuts! :)

I was part of a similar program, in Vancouver, in the 60's. Screened at 7 then sent to a special class which was moved to a new school every year.

We had very little structure, and did pretty much what we wanted. Most work was in independent research projects. I think that most of us learned that we could do very little and still get by wrt standards. Produced under achievers IMO.

If a bit of discipline and competition had been added to the program, the results would probably have been a lot different.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Yes very obsessed with new topics/interests. In fact they seem to consume me. Once I am intrigued by something I feel myself wanting to know every last detail of the subject. I've always just thoughtthat everyone else does that too.

Re: Were You Part Of The "Mentally Gifted Minds" Program In California Scools back in the 70's?
Same here in Tennessee. First started in the third grade, there were 20 of us that always got pulled out to take test that the rest of the students did not have to take. Women dressed as nurses where also in the room when we were tested. Remember one was a speed reading test. In the 5th grade I could read a scrolling text shown on an overhead screen at the rate of 230 words per minute and comprehend 95% of what I read. The testing continued until I graduated but the number of students declined. By the time I was a senior there were only 3 of us left. By my Junior year Army and Air force personal were there. The other two joined the service when we graduated, both have recently retired.

I speed read too
 Quoting: Lil Miss Trouble

I remember being told in 4th grade that I was reading at 12th grade level, and they wanted me to do some speed-reading program, but I didn't want to do it.

What's weird is that I am the youngest sibling, none of my other siblings were in gifted programs.

I was thinking of posting the same question about TV as well. Luckily my husband also finds the documentary style programs interesting.

I, too, obsessively research a subject on a spur of the moment idea.

Now, how many actually have a lot of close friends or do you feel somehow detached, not really close? I know many people who are still friends with people from childhood; my sister makes friends easily and still keeps in contact with people from high school.

I try to stay in touch with certain friends from the past, but that has turned out to be more of a text message to two people say Merry Christmas or a once per year phone call. I don't have any close friends really. My wife is my best friend and I'm comfortable with that.

Yikes! Most of these accounts are eerily similar to the events in my life (or those events I can remember.)

Evidently, high test scores brought me to the attention of TPTB. Supposedly, my IQ was very high, and the schools wanted to advance me two grades. My mother refused, as she was worried about my emotional well being, but I presume some deal was struck. For the next few years, I was pulled out of class to join other kids in testing days.

I do remember speed reading (which I hated) and that we also had to do a lot of reading outside of class. I'm not recalling anything else though, not of the classes or anything else that went on in my life during those years. Blank.
