I wonder too, why was I chosen to be in the program. I did teach myself how to read at 4, but that's not so remarkable. I just wanted to know really badly and I kept asking my grandmother what every word I saw was. I eventually figured out how to sound them out and read since I knew the alphabet and the phonetics. I feel like a complete dumbass these days, fast forward 20 years or so. I've done nothing so special or fantastic in my life. I've worked quite a few jobs, served some time in the military, and traveled here and there...nothing special. I know plenty of people who aren't like us, who think confined to the conventional and socially accepted "boxes", and they are generally the ones who are successful. If you want to measure success in terms of material stuff and money.

Yes and yes to the both of you. Have always had a distaste for Mensa. I think by burning down our boxes, some of us may have realized that the material isn't as material as many think. My greatest wealth is in my friends and family. My greatest triumphs are in my interactions with others. If I can change a person's mind from illogical to logic, that to me is a great triumph. I may not be successful by society's definition but I feel like I've done and appreciated more in my life than most. I'd rather be the independent wanderer who questions everything than one who just blindly follows convention.

Wow !!! Exactly...I went to the University of Wisconsin to Study Math and Computer Science...A year and a half into it ...I could not stand it...5 days a week...8 hours a day at a computer terminal...Joined the service and entered the "Secret Service" of my government...On of my main jobs is to teach others how to build interpersonal skills and rapport...Convince a person to become your friend in 10 minutes...then another 10 minutes to convince a person to answer questions...all through a subtle conversation...Call it the Jedi mind trick...

Interesting. I don't need to be taught that though -- I am just 'one of those people'. People meet me, open up, and tell me their whole life stories and/or troubles without me having to do a thing.

Sometimes I wish I could stop it though -- whatever it is that I do innately -- because I don't always want to hear everyone's troubles, and I am so polite that its hard to 'get away' once they start venting.

Same here. I'm always invoking the TMI rule. Perhaps we're the ones who couldn't be convinced to use our "powers" for the dark side? I tell people what they're doing when they do it, I never hide the fact I can read between their lines and see their thoughts by understanding their thought process. It's why I have a tight circle... I hate it when I can see lies and manipulation from people I'm supposed to be a friend to.
