So I guess if there are harmonics, and average sized quakes, we can work out how deep (or how close to the surface) the magma could be.

That must of been the 3.6 and 3.7 back to back.....looks like they are getting bigger!

Looks like a definite volcanic signal. I wouldnt go so far as to say Harmonic yet though.

Yellowstone web cam wont reload for me..stuck. Now i cant see if the Old Faithful went off or not as scheduled..

I saw it, it went 2 minutes late than predicted and at the moment the cam is showing heavy smoke coming out of 2 holes in the ground

Wow, so we either get to have a super colossal or a mega colossal eruption at Yellowstone according to the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI).

Well depends exactly on the properties of the magma etc.

Could be anything from a VEI 1 to a VEI 8 (for people that don't know, VEI 8 is 1000km^3 or more of ejecta)

It's all the same magma chamber. So whether it pops under the lake or under the current swarm area doesn't make much difference. It's the same magma - which researchers have called VEI 8.

I would dare say it is quite ugly indeed :)

just my two cents worth...but It is probably not so much the magma moving west as it is the entire North American Plate...

all that activity in Haiti ... (thirty quakes all five or above yesterday) have to have some effect on the plate...and just try to imagine what it would take to move one of these things... yet we are seeing movement all over it, where it is cracked... New Madrid OKC and as far west as WA state... which could have been the one that started all of this...and triggered the one in Haiti as it went down and on the other side of the plate, there were severe quakes that were shallow...(that side going up)



I keep saying it...because it was what kept me calm during the last swarm (same time last year) but the "official" word at that time was "not to worry UNLESS they got to three points on the Richter scale) ... of course it was in a different location (under the Lake) but this year we have had over a half a dozen quakes OVER three points and almost four points ... with them apparently getting bigger all the time...

I don't live in the "kill zone" but I do in the Ash fallout area, and I went and bought masks and goggles for the whole family last year so we could keep the Ash from collapsing the roof (it weighs much more than snow) ... and I am glad I have them... it doesn't hurt to be safe ... and I am not an alarmist but I am concerned, this is not like last year, that we only noticed after a hundred quakes...
