Yep, what a lot of folks don't realize is that the caldera has shifted in the past and will continue to do so....just because they aren't in the "PARK" doesn't mean they aren't a part of it....

It's either two broken seismos or a sustained volcanic tremor. The one at Norris has been going on for days now.

We've been discussing it but no one seems to notice.

I am sort of surprised at the lack of attention about this.

The area of the most recent lava flow in Yellowstone, (YPP) about 70,000 years ago, is really acting up today, and few seem to notice. (Even if it does settle, this has been impressive.

In a nutshell, the place in Yellowstone that has the most recently spewed magma is acting up like a crazy bowl of jelly…..

I don’t know exactly what will happen, maybe nothing, but in view of what seems to get attention at GLP, am surprised that this has so far not received much more attention

Just a different way of viewing the seismos.

I thinks its time someone inject some reality here:

1. The tremors that were coming to a close when this thread was created were due primarily to an earthquake swarms. Swarms are not uncommon in Yellowstone, and this 1-2 year long swarm was not associated with any large amount of caldera uplift or hydrothermal changes.
2. Earlier this, earthquakes at Yellowstone dropped to background levels. Recently it APPEARS a new swarm (far smaller than the previous one) may be starting. However this agian NORMAL for Yellowstone. There is NO noticable uplift (in fact there is no ongoing uplift anywhere in yellowstone right now)occuring with this.
3. A new study that concluded at the end of 2009 provide the most accurate picture of the yellowstone magma chamber and mantle plume to date. The chamber is infact 20% larger than previously thought, with some additional capacity to be found between 50-100 miles down at the upper portion of the mantle plume. The study also confirmed that Yellowstone's magma chamber does not have enough magma in it at present for even a small eruption, nor do any and all avaible data suggest that we are any nearer to an eruption than we were thousands of years ago.

Enough is enough IMO folks. You can wishcast and watch this thing all you want, but based on the data its EXTREMELY unlikely that it will do ANYTHING other than what its doing right now in your or my lifetime. If you want a caldera volcano to watch that IS more likely to erupt in future, one which had a series of rather strange and localized shallow swarms earlier this year and late last year, I suggest you take a look at the Long Valley caldera and assocaited Long Valley Volcanic observatory. Please try to keep things in perspective folks. There is nothing wrong with watching and ahhing an ooing over the normal earthquake cycle of a volcano, but there is alot wrong with the dis and misinformation concerning nautral features of the world like yellowstone. Perhpas instead of contributing to it we should try to reduce the amount of rumors and disinformation in the world.

So apparently what I said went in one ear and out the other. Of course there is a clear pattern ITS A FREAKING ACTIVE VOLCANO! There will ALWAYS be earthquakes there and there will ALWAYS be swarms occurring and no, the recent quakes are NOT indicative of breaking rock beneath the lake the only thing they do indicate is the normal behavior of the ground on top of an active magma chamber. There is virtually 0 chance of an eruption in our lifetimes due to the simple fact that the chamber is not even half full of magma, in fact its like 1/4 full and half of that again is non-eruptable (in other words if its non erupt able its a large chunk of semi molten rock instead of actually liquid magma). No duh there is a clear pattern there is ALWAYS a clear pattern thats how its supposed to be.

I really wish people would stop saying things like the above poster, things that have no basis in reality. Wish for an eruption all you want (if you enjoy things like the world ending and tons of people dying horribly). But please stop saying things like: oh its erupted or Oh its about to erupt when its not, you scare alot of people that way. Isn't there enough problems and real fear in the world already?

Seismic Summary: During the month of October 2010, 68 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone National Park region. The largest event was a magnitude 2.5 on October 26 at 10:33 PM MDT, located about 6 miles east southeast of West Yellowstone, MT. A small earthquake swarm was recorded October 6 -8 about 13 miles northeast of Old Faithful. The swarm consisted of 15 events with magnitudes 1.6 to -0.4.

Earthquake activity continues at background levels.

Ground Deformation Summary: Careful analysis of the Yellowstone GPS data shows that the period of accelerated Yellowstone caldera uplift, beginning in 2004, has decreased. Some GPS stations exhibit little change and others appear to reflect slight subsidence. A record of recent ground displacement can be found at:
