Melbourne sweats through hottest night in 108 years

Tuesday, 12 January 2010

A woman cools off by spaying water on herself from a shower head at St Kilda Beach on January 12, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne recorded its equal hottest night ever last night with temperatures hovering above 34 degrees celsius for most of the night, equalling the previous hottest night in February 1902.

The Australian city of Melbourne has sweltered through its hottest night since 1902, with temperatures topping 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit), meteorologists said today.

Millions tossed and turned in the overnight heat in Australia's second city, with power cuts exacerbating the problem in some areas and some people even resorted to nocturnal trips to the beach to cool off.

"It's probably the most uncomfortable night I've ever had Down Under," said Andrew Jefferson of Ballarat, west of Melbourne, who emigrated from Britain in 2001.

Thousands of homes were without power as electricity companies' equipment failed in the heat. The city was also hit by hundreds of train cancellations on Monday, enraging commuters.

Meteorologists said earlier this month that the last decade was the hottest on record in Australia.

Come live out in Perth. It's hot here today. 43 degrees celsius, 42 deg yesterday (Sunday 17th).

Overnight, it got down to a cool 32 degrees. No wind either, it was bloody uncomfortable mate.

I just love it when the talk about "record breaking" weather in the newly settled countries. In the grand scheme of things a few hundred years of records means zero in a world as changable and ancient as ours. Hell the Vikings were farming Greenland, they would think the current ice coverage was pretty extreme. The dustbowl of the 30's in the US is actually (according to soil samples) that areas "normal" condition and the good growing conditions experienced by the new settlers are the anomally.

Some people tend to be obsessed with sifting through news items and only reporting them if they fit their agenda. OP is obviously not from Melbourne, otherwise he/she would know we are all freezing our nuts off today and would pounce on this.

Here in Greece we get 99 degree nights fairly regularly. You see lots of little old Greek ladies wandering down to the beach and sitting in the sea to cool down. Sadly no beach barbies though, outdoor fires banned in the summer due to fire risk.

It's fine as long as the wind is not blowing. Doesn't feel that cold because all the moisture freezes out of the air. Seriously, I am much happier in those temps if dressed properly than in cold, windy, rainy winter weather much farther south.
